Prime Sheep - 08.05.24
On Wednesday 3rd May 2024 Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,723 prime sheep, comprising 142 Spring Lambs, 2,345 Prime Hoggs & 3,236 Cast Ewes & Rams.
A good entry of 142 Spring Lambs were forward with a healthy whole sale average of 443ppk overall or 450ppk sqq. Topping at 483ppk for 1 weighing at 46kg achieving £222 from Messrs Noble, Mill Farm.
Top price of £230 came for 3 Suffolks weighing 57kg from Grange Walls. Messrs Noble’s run of Spring Lambs averaged 47kg at 455.50ppk or £217.50pph. Demand is increasing for Spring Lambs and more are needed next week.
Another strong entry of 2345 Hoggs were forward with all classes of Stock still an exceptionally strong trade. Meat continues to fly easily exceeding 400ppk plus for both heavies and common type sheep.
Toping today’s sale at 545ppk for a pen of 5 Beltex at 40kg achieving £218 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck closely followed at 536ppk for a pen at 44kg achieving £236 from Mr N Gill, Moory Lea Farm, with the same home topping per head on 2 occasions for 59kg at £253 or 429ppk.
Suffolk Hoggs topped at 404ppk for a pen of 18 at 54kg at £218 FROM Messrs Irving, East Cliff. With Mules to 449ppk for 41kg at £184 from Messrs Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke. Messrs Dickinson, North Netherscales sold clipped Scotch Hoggs at 400ppk for 45kg at £180. Swales sold to 380ppk for 45kg at £171 from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House.
Literally unbelievable but Penrith pulled it out the bag again with an overall sale average of £163.83 being achieved for over 3000 Cast Ewes and Rams sold.
Topping the sale today went to Holme House with a pen of 5 Texel Ewes selling to A J Meats, Birmingham. With once again over 600 Ewes sold in excess of £200.
With a greater number of 823 Suffolk Ewes sold averaging £186.99 topping at £257 for a pure Suffolk Ewe from Backmuir Livestock, Aberdeen selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. With larger pens achieving £230 x16, £225 x14, £225 x17, £224 x12, £220 x23, £216 x20, £215 x21, £208 x21, £207 x19, £205 x21. Some vendors quoting a £25 ahead larger return than previous sales in the week.
Horned Ewes topped at £148 for a pen of Swales from Messrs R B & D J Bousfield, The Old Forge selling to Mr A Dawson.
Cast Rams averaged a mighty £178.64 topping at £290 for a pure Charollais from Gate & West Farm, Suffolk.
From start to finish demand was fast and spirited from competitive buyers.
