Today we held our monthly sale of 21 Dairy Cattle. Where do we start, what a trade! Local competitors fall a long way behind with nine animals achieving over £3,000 in our commercial sale. Quality was consistent throughout from all consignors with heifers averaging a mind-boggling £2,885, double the numbers required to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £3,400 for a second-calved Fleckvieh from Messrs JM & J Fisher & Daughters, Holme Wrangle, giving 35 litres, purchased by Messrs JE Bellas & Son. First-time vendors Messrs Williamson, Barrowmoor Farm, Appleby, brought pure class to the ring with a pair of second calved British Friesian cows, just 10 days fresh, giving between 30-35 litres, achieving £3,300 and £3,250, both also purchased by Messrs JE Bellas & Son. The Dairy Shorthorns still attracted plenty of interest, topping at £2,950 from Messrs GA & D Dent, Winton House, with a lovely roaned heifer, Winbrook Vi 191, calved 4-weeks, giving 22 litres. Messrs DW Cannon & Son, Low Abbey, sold a total of 3 in excess of £3,000, topping at £3,300 for a Holstein X Ayrshire heifer, giving 30 litres, purchased by Messrs TW Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm. Messrs J & B Donald, Lamonby Hall, were first in the ring with some correct and very milky heifers, calved 3-4-weeks, giving 34/35 litres, topping at £3,100 for a Montbeliarde X, with a further 2 achieving £3,000 each. Today we held our fortnightly sale of 132 Rearing Calves and Stirks, with demand continuing its fine form from our previous sale. The sale topped at £1,690 for a pair of cracking red Limousin heifers, 14-months-old, from first-time consignors Messrs W & W Patterson, Coupland Beck Farm, purchased by Geoff Bell, Far Broom. This home also sold another pair to £1,680, with this run of 12 great heifers selling to average £1,540. Bullocks topped at £960 for a pen of 4 British Friesian from Messrs Wood, Longlands. All classes of calves once again fell short of buyers’ requirements here in Penrith, many more are needed and I urge you to come and witness it for yourself. The sale topped at £960 for an outstanding Charolais bull calf, 7-weeks-old from Messrs JAH Walton & Son, Bank View. Heifers topped at £880 for a 4-month-old British Blue from Messrs JM & RM Haston, Dearham Hall. Mr DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, sold a lovely run of 12 Limousin bulls and heifers at 12-weeks-old to average £720. Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, sold 3-week-old Limousin bulls to £530 and Aberdeen Angus bulls to £520. Pure British Friesian calves sold exceptionally well with Messrs JD & F Wharton, Town Head Farm, topping at £465 for 3-weeks-old, with this run of 3 averaging £428. On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,625 prime sheep, comprising of 461 prime hoggs, 782 spring lambs & 2,382 cast ewes & rams. A larger offering of 782 lambs were forward with demand still extremely strong. A wholesale average of 361ppk/sqq or 358ppk overall or £158 per head. Topping today’s sale at 421ppk for 5 brilliant Beltex lambs, weighing 38kg and achieving £160 from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm. Top price per head of £199 for a brilliant texel lamb, weighing 59kg from H M Livestock. Heavy sheep prove to be at the peak of demand. Messrs Graves, Hesket House sold a run of 25 heavy sheep to average 51kg at £181 per head. Suffolk lambs continue to sell well with Mr W N Robinson, Sunnyside for 2 Suffolks, weighing 38kg, achieving £156 or 411ppk. Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall sold 3 pens of Suffolk lambs to 376ppk for 45kg achieving £169. Many more lambs are needed here to fulfil buyers needed. 493 hoggs were forward with meaty sheep of all classes. Topping at 341ppk for 41kg Beltex at £140 from Messrs J C Robinson, Black Leases. Top price per head came from Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot of £201 for 3 separate pens firstly for a pen of 4 at 71kg. In the cast Ewe section an overall sale average of £158 was achieved, topping at £300 from Mr W Morrison, South Bogbain with superb pure Texels selling to A J Meats, Birmingham. The heaviest of the ewes still motoring over £200. Topping at £245 with Suffolk half breds from Tann House, Aberdeenshire with 521 Suffolk Ewes sold to average £177.84. Horned ewes held there value once again proving very good to sell topping at £150 for best of scotch blackface with larger pens to £135x16, £122x54, £114x39, £112x15. Swaledales from Messrs Barker, Town Head, topped at £128 for a pen of 11 selling to Mr M Bowe. Cast Rams sold exceptionally well with pure Bluefaced Leicester’s to £254 and Texel X Bluefaced Leicesters to £250 with numerous others to £200.
