Prime Sheep - 01.05.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4899 prime sheep, comprising of 2158 prime hoggs & 2749 cast ewes & rams.
Pre – sale predictions were smashed with a flying trade with a whole sale average of 402ppk sqq or 392ppk overall or £185pph.
Top price of 590ppk was achieved the highest seen here in Penrith for a pen of 6 outstanding Beltex lambs from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck weighing 39kg or £230ppk. Top price per head of £256 came for a pen of Beltex Hoggs weighing at 46kg or 557ppk from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe. 57 hoggs sold in excess of 500ppk. 221 hoggs sold for £220 or more with 772 sheep sold realising over £200.
Suffolks topped at £216 for 61kg from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe or 407ppk for a pen of 41kg at £167 from Messrs J Carrick, Ireshope Plains. All classes of hill sheep sold to great returns with Messrs W & S E Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, selling Scotch Blackface hoggs to £191 for a pen of 22 at 47kg or 407ppk for 24 at £179.
Cheviots topped at £210 for a pen of 15 at 53kg off Blackfold or 421ppk for a pen pf 38kg selling for £160 from Messrs Potter, Townhead. Cheviot Mules sold to £203 for a 53kg, from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck. Once again meat remains key and quality continues to reap rewards.
In the cast ewe section it’s most definitely a trade not seen before. 2748 cast stock sold to an honest average of £171.43. Topping at £300 ahead from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road with Texels selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
A grand total of 747 sold in excess of £200, 27% of the sale. 641 Suffolk ewes averaged a mind boggling £196.98 topping at £270 for a pure ewe from L Shaw, Clifton selling to J B Foods, Bradford. Leading prices in larger quantities of Suffolk ewes 22 x £234, 12 x £234, 17 x £234, 17 x £226, 23 x £220, 23 x £216, 24 x £212 a total of 75 ewes on the bounce in three pens achieved £208 pretty much astonishing!!
A pen of 10 Scotch Mule ewes from Backmuir Livestock achieved a mind blowing £196 with several pens at £170 plus.
Throughout the sale Horned ewes sold to a very fast trade topping at £143 from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside with a pen of 18 selling to Pickstock Foods.
116 Cast Rams on offer averaged £179.53 topping at £270 for 3 Texel x Charollais Rams with numerous others £200 ahead plus.
