Prime Sheep - 17.04.24
Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,978 prime sheep, comprising 2,800 prime hoggs & 3,178 cast ewes & rams.
Another great entry of prime hoggs forward with all classes still in strong demand and heavy hoggs selling exceptionally well. The sale topped at 549ppk for a pen of 10 Texel hoggs, weighing 41kg, realising £225 from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck. This was closely followed at 537ppk for a pen of 7 Beltex hoggs, weighing 43kg, achieving £231 from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm.
Heavy hoggs topped at 490ppk for a pair of Texels, weighing 51kg from Messrs W & SE Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, realising £250 per head.
A top price per head of £268 was achieved for a pair of 58kg Continental hoggs from Grange Walls, with three other vendors selling hoggs to £264. A total of 36 lots or 164 hoggs sold in excess of £241 per head.
Suffolks topped at £262 for a single weighing 77kg from Mr B Taylor, Thwaite Hall. A pen of 10 Suffolks realised 410ppk for 52kg from Messrs JL Potter & Sons, Town Head, achieving £214 per head.
Hill hoggs again sold very well, with Scotch Blackfaced hoggs weighing 57kg realising £200, for a pen of 6 from Mr D Crew, Gall Farm. Messrs W & SE Dicksinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, topped at 418ppk for a pen of 26, weighing 44kg, realising £184. Swaledales sold to 388ppk/£186 for a pen of 22, weighing 48kg from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside.

Greater numbers came forward in the ewe section, with a sale average of £154.42.
Pretty much a mirror image of last weeks sale trade and demand. Topping the sale at £300 went to Mr C B Abernethy, Belvdene with a superb Texel Ewe selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
Suffolks again romped into £234, for 5 pure ewes also from Belvedene, with all 781 sold, averaging £168.47.
5 Huge Charollais ewes from Gate and West Farm, achieved £265 with plenty of others £200 plus. Messrs J J Henderson, Park House sold a ring full of 24 English Mule realising £173.
Horned ewes fell along way short of buyer’s requirements. Topping at £140 for a pen of 18 Northumberland Blackies from Lane End Farm with over 300 Blackies sold to average £117.21.
Swaledale topped at £132 from Messrs Bousfield, Renwick. Cast Rams with weight comfortably £200 ahead plus topping at £218.
