Prime Sheep - 10.04.24
On Wednesday 10th April 2024 Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,359 prime sheep, comprising 1,836 prime hoggs & 2,523 cast ewes & rams.
Trade continued to reflect on from last week in the prime hogg section. A whole sale average of £192pph was achieved or 400ppk overall 410ppk SQQ. 900 hoggs sold in excess of £200. Topping today’s sale at 551ppk for a Beltex Hogg, weighing 45kg achieving £248 from Messrs Ridley Ranbeck, closely followed by 550ppk for a Continental hogg, weighing 42kg at £231 from Messrs Dickinson Kirkbarrow.
Top price per head was £254 for 1 hogg at 90kg from Messrs Nevison High House Farm with 2 other vendors selling at £250 per head.
Firstly for 2 continentals at 62kg from Messrs Savage Petteril Green and secondly for a pen of 14 at 65kg from Messrs Carruthers Towcett.
Suffolks topped at £239 for 9 at 63kg from Messrs Irving East Cliff.
Scotch Blackface Hoggs topped at £200 for 2 at 55kg from Messrs Carrick Ireshope with a top of 414ppk for a pen of 25 at 42kg at £178 from Messrs Coulthard Brisco Hill. Literally another bonanza sale with no let-up in trade or demand was the order of the day, most classes being up £10 ahead on the week, most definitely not a drop of £20-£40 as seen at some other centres.
In the cast ewe section an average of £152.48 was achieved topping at £315 a head from Mr A Straney Glenroyd Road selling to Romford Halal, Essex.
A total of 302 Ewes sold in excess of £200, with Suffolks averaging £175.03 topping at £270 from Mr A Straney with 72 selling in excess of £200 ahead.
Bluefaced Leicester’s topped at £199 with 3 from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene selling to Mr A Dawson
Mule Ewes averaged £147.14 with all heavies £160 plus topping at £186.
Horned Ewes sold with the greatest ease, numbers very short of orders required, Scotch Blackface topped at £144 for a pen of 17 from Holme House selling to Pickstock Foods with all sold to average £111.17. Plenty of Swaledales realised £100 ahead plus.
A total of 12 cast rams forward averaging £169.98 topping at £270 for Charolais selling to Field Fresh.
