On Wednesday 3rd May 2024 Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,783 prime sheep, comprising 24 spring lambs, 2,770 prime hoggs & 4,013 cast ewes & rams.
Another great entry of 2,770 hoggs with quality far superior than the previous week and a trade to match.
A whole sale average of 408ppk/418ppk sqq or £194 per head a credit to all vendors that support this mart and bring quality well finished sheep.
Topping the sale at 533ppk for a pen of 12 shapey Beltex hoggs, weighing 43kg realising £229 from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside. Top price per head of £270 was achieved for 2 Suffolk hoggs weighing 78kg from Grange Walls. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold heavies to 450ppk for 56kg realising £252, with the same home selling 47kg realising 511ppk/£240.
Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey sold 37g Continental hoggs to £197/532ppk. Messrs Irving, East Cliff sold an exceptional run off 66 heavy hoggs averaging 62kg realising £239.52. Mule hoggs sold to £198 for 51kg from Tarn End.
Cheviot Hoggs sold to 448ppk for 10, weighing 48kg achieving £215 from Messrs Savage, Petteril Green. Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck sold cheviots to £244 for 65kg. Messrs Gillespie, Quarry Gill sold 33, clipped Cheviot hoggs to average 48kg/£201.42.
Another large entry of hill sheep were still exceptionally good to sell topping at 416ppk for 46 blackface hoggs, weighing 43kg, realising £179 from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow.
Top price per head of £189 for Blackface Hoggs, for a pen of 15 weighing 47kg from Messrs Carrick, Ireshope Plains. Swaledales sold to 396ppk for 27 weighing 45kg, achieving £178 from Messrs Carrick, Ireshope Plains.
The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams was truly amazing from start to finish. A record day of trading, with most breed averages higher than most other centres.
10%/367 head sold in excess of £200. The sale topped at £295 for 3 Texel ewes from Holme House purchased by regular customer A J Meats, Birmingham.
Once again, the Suffolks stole the show with 582 sold, averaging a huge £180.87. Topping at £262 for 2 superb pure-bred ewes from local breeders Messrs T E Irving & Sons, East Cliffe, Kirklinton, with a total of 115 ewes over £200.
15 active buyers will always prove to provide healthy spirited bidding and a fair genuine trade for all vendors, with customers travelling length and breath of the country to take advantage of this trade.
668 Mule ewes averaged £146.99 topping at £196 for 2 huge English Mule ewes from Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Son, High House, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Larger pens achieving £168 for a mix of 25 Mule & Masham ewes from Goldon Lane, Suffolk.
Mr P Baker, Lincoln sold 18 English Mules realising £166.
Horned ewes were considered to be extreme rates with Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside selling 10, realising £134, purchased by Mr J Khan. With all sold averaging £90.57.
331 Scotch Blackfaced averaged £119.21. Topping at £154, but a pen of 41 from Tarn End achieved £132 and Backmuir Livestock, Aberdeen sold 35 to £132.
130 Cast Rams sold to an average £160.97. Topping at £248 from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road with numerous others £200 plus.
