Prime Sheep - 20.03.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,826 prime sheep, comprising of 3,831 prime hoggs & 2,995 cast ewes & rams.
An overall average of 394ppk SQQ/391ppk overall (£183 per head) with a large amount of grass-fed hoggs present. Consignments of well-fed sheep were said to be dearer on the week.
Topping today’s sale at 528ppk (£248) was a superb single Beltex hogg weighing 47kg from Messrs Holliday & Graham, Bolton Wood Lane Farm, Wigton. This was closely followed at 524ppk for three Beltex hoggs weighing 45kg achieving £236 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck.
A top price of £255 was realised for an 85kg Charollais hogg from Grange Walls. This home’s run of 39 averaged £230.
Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold a great run of 82 hoggs to average 46kg at 468ppk or £216.65. Over 10 consignments of sheep averaged over £200pph. Numbers for can be easily handled here at Penrith.
Hill-bred and Mule hoggs continue to sell very well, with Mules selling to £192 (417ppk) for 46kg from Mr T Magnay, Galleywreay Farm.
Cheviot Mule hoggs sold to £211 for 54kg from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck.
Scotch Blackface hoggs sold to 407ppk (£183) for 45kg from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall.
Swaledales sold to £181 for a pen of 7 weighing 48kg from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside. Messrs H M & R Ivinson & Sons, Hole House, sold a run of 36 Swales weighing 45kg for 384ppk (£173).
Cast ewe numbers just seem to be tightening each week with demand rising and values £20 - £30 ahead more than previous local centres sales, quoted by both buyers and vendors.
The sale topped at £315 for some superb Texel ewes from Mr A Straney, Northern Ireland. This was closely followed at £312 for a pen of four Texels from Holme House, all selling to Mr J Linsley.
An over all sale average of £138.32 was achieved for a near 3000 cast sheep sold!! We have vendors travelling the length and breath of the UK to take advantage of our 14 active buyers.
Suffolk ewes met a fierce trade with a breed average of £157.04 being achieved for the 531 sold, topping at £240 for a pair from Mr C B Abernethy, Aberdeen. A total of 169 Suffolks sold in excess of £170 per head!
English Mule ewes topped at £164 from Messrs T N & J Hall, Ainstable Hall, with a pen of 13, selling to J B Foods, Bradford. Backmuir Livestock closely followed at £154 for a pen of 30 Scotch Mules.
Horned ewes sold with so much ease, topping at £126 for Scotch Blackfaced ewes from High Moss.
A consignment of milking goats topped at £136 for a pen of 6 from H McPhee, Meaburn Hall, selling to Mr R Skelton.
Plenty of Cast Rams sold at £200 plus topping at £230 from first time customers Mr D MacQueen, Dalmagarry Farm, selling to Yorkshire Halal with seventy sold to average £154.47.
