Prime Sheep - 06.03.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,717 prime sheep, comprising of 3,027 prime hoggs & 3,690 cast ewes & rams.
The prime hogg trade continues to surpass everyone’s expectations with a whole sale average of £167.78 (370p/kg) SQQ.
Top price of 468ppk (£187) was achieved for a pair of Continentals weighing 40kg from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe. This was closely followed by another pair from the same home weighing 42kg to realise 467ppk (£196).
A top price per head of £224 was achieved for a single Continental weighing 66kg from Grange Walls.
Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Son, High House Farm had a consignment of nineteen heavy Continentals to average £201.37. Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall, sold a great run of 107 expertly finished hoggs to average £198.13, this included a pen of 14 Scotch Blackface hoggs at 46kg achieving £173. Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold their first draw of the season, with ninety-nine forward to average 46kg at 402ppk (£188.87).
Messrs T H Harrison, Sleddale Hall, sold Mules to £170 for 50kg. Messrs A Tiffin & Sons, Wham Head Farm, sold a pen of nine Scotch Blackfaced hoggs at 393ppk/£169 for 43kg. Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, sold Cheviots to 405ppk (£170) for 42kg. Swaledales sold to a top of 342ppk (£164) for a pen of fourteen weighing 48kg from Messrs S & W Maughan.
103 hoggs in the sale sold in excess of £200, and seventy-eight hoggs sold in excess of 450ppk.
We have an increased numbers of hogg buyers present in Penrith and many more sheep can be easily sold to the vendors’ advantage.
A consecutively busy week in the cast ewe ring, with a huge entry and all buyers present and keen to purchase. All cast ewes & rams sold to average a hefty £124.43. Topping at £330 for a pen of Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
A shortage of pure-bred ewes drove the trade throughout with other meaty types required to fulfil buyers’ orders.
637 Suffolk ewes were forward and achieved a breed average of £146.75. Topping at £220 for a pen of pures from Mr C B Abernethy, Belvedene, purchased by Mr D Kemp.
Once again, the horned ewes and Mules proved very popular to sell, this finding them £2-£3 per head more on the week again. All the Mules in the sale sold to average£116.70, topping at £148 from Backmuir Livestock, Aberdeen, purchased by Mr A Dawson. Strong Scotch Blackfaced ewes were again regularly £100 plus, topping at £118, and closely followed at £116 for a pen of sixteen from Backmuir Livestock.
Cast rams produced sharper returns, topping at £206 for a Suffolk X Texel from Mr J Bland, Clea Hall, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Several tups sold at £150 plus, with heavy tups comfortably £170-£200.
