Prime Sheep - 28.02.24
On Wednesday 28th February 2024 Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,466 prime sheep, comprising of 2,633 prime hoggs & 3,833 cast ewes & rams. Another drastic rise in price was seen giving a whole-sale average of £158per head (£53 up on the same week last year) and 343ppk with an SQQ average of 360ppk.
Top price of 486ppk came from a single Beltex hogg weighing 57kg achieving £180 from M/s Gardner, Glebelands. The same home sold a pen of 10 39kg hoggs, realising £185 and also sold 34kgs at £161 (474ppk).
Top price per head of £212 for 2 hoggs at 80kg was Messrs Nevison, High House. also selling a pen of 7 at 53kg realising £210 or 396ppk.
Holliday and Graham, Bolton Wood Lane sold heavies to 400ppk for 50kg at £200. 43 Hoggs sold in excess of £200.
Suffolk Hoggs topped at 355ppk for 20 at 49kg realising £174 from Anderson Bros, Nether Stenries with the same home selling Romneys at 47kg to £161 for 14.
Mules topped at 346ppk for a pen of 19 at 46kg achieving £159. Messrs Ivinson, Hole House sold his run of 80 mules to average 49kg at £159.75 per head. Scotch Blackface Hoggs sold to 351ppk for a pen of 12 at 45kg achieving £158 from Messrs Addison, Greystone House. Many more prime hoggs are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demands.
Another boom was witnessed in the ewe ring with several new customers from all over the British Isles taking advantage of a consistent ring of 14 active buyers, with orders for all types.
First time customers Kedzile Farms sold a pen of 5 superb pure Texel Ewes to £315 purchased by Mr J Linsley and a pen of 9 Suffolk X ewes to achieve £202.
Mr C B Abernethy, Belveden wasn’t far behind them with 5 Pure Texel ewes achieving £300 to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
Heavy ewes are selling easily week after week, with all Suffolks sold averaging £150.04 with pen after pen realising £170-£185.
Mules and horned ewes saw a rise of £4-£6 a head with mules averaging £116.38. Messrs W A & D Woof, Brackenbank topped at £150 for huge English Mules. Backmuir Livestock sold Scotch Mules to £138.
Making a return to Penrith for the second time Messrs R Wallace & Co, Mains of Collin, Castle Douglas, sold 121 Scotch Blackface ewes to average £104.85. Topping at £117 for 16, closely followed at £114 for 33 and a further 47 realising £99. Horned ewes were comfortably the easiest to sell and more are required for next week.
Tups saw a very similar level trade, with heavy weights coming to £170 plus topping at £200 from Backmuir Livestock, closely followed at £185 for a pen of 12 Suffolk X.
