Prime Sheep - 07.02.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,254 prime sheep, comprising of 3200 prime hoggs & 3054 cast ewes & rams.
Another great entry of 3200 Prime Hoggs were forward again to an exceptionally eager and competitive ringside of buyers. Today’s sale topped at 435ppk for 2 lovely Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton, weighing 37kg, realising £161.
Top price per head of £188 came for a pen of 9, weighing 59kg from Grange Wells, closely followed at £187 for 2, weighing 60kg from Messrs Haston, Dearham Hall.
Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold an outstanding run of 58 exceptionally fed hoggs to average 52kg realising 338ppk/£174.69.
Numerous consignments sold over 400ppk with Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey selling 39 to average 36.69kg/419.5ppk realising £153.92.
A big entry of 500 Mules topped at £156 for a pen of 18, weighing 56kg from Messrs Ivinson, Hole House. Messrs Lowis, Waterside House sold a pen of 22 weighing 48kg realising 306ppk. Suffolk lambs sold to 346ppk for a pen of 20 Suffolk Mules weighing 37kg/£128.
Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck sold his pen of 14 Cheviot Mule Hoggs at 53kg to £166. Messrs Ivinson, Skelling sold a pen of 22 cheviot hoggs to 327ppk for 44kg, realising £144.
Messrs Weir, High Lodore sold a pen of 15 Pure Herdwick Hoggs weighing 33kg realising £98 or 296ppk.
Messrs Dickinsons, North Netherscales sold Scotch Blackface hoggs to £145 for a pen of 16 weighing 47kg.
A whole sale average of 324ppk or 339sqq and £148.50 per head. Meaty fed sheep continue to reap massive rewards. Again, numbers can be easily handled and more numbers are required weekly.
Ewes again broke the 3000 barrier, with demand sky high resulting in a sale average of £108.25 topping at £290 from Backmuir Livestock.
Weight sold exceptionally well with Suffolks regularly £150-£170. Mules saw a great rise with all sold, averaging £106.78, topping at £136 from Mr C Edmondson, Greening. Backmuir Livestock sold 18 to £128 and 29 to £123.
The horned ewes saw a comfortable rise with strong Swaledales £80-£90 and blackie ewes topping at £110.
Plenty of demand for Rams, comfortably £170 plus topping at £200 on two occasions.
