Prime Sheep - 24.01.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,789 prime sheep, comprising of 2,406 prime hoggs & 3,383 cast ewes & rams.
A great entry of prime lambs was forward at our weekly sale with a flying trade witnessed, up £28 on the year. A sale average of 319ppk.
Best export types regularly reached 400ppk with well fleshed meaty sheep very easy to sell. Top price of 413ppk was achieved for 2 exceptional lambs at 40kg/£165 from Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey with this vendor selling his run of 101 Continental & Suffolk lambs to average 378ppk/£153.50.
Top price per head of £176 was reached for a total of 9 Texel lambs, weighing 53kg from Messrs Murray, Prior House, with the same run of 40 expertly fed sheep averaging 54kg/£170.
Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall sold 50 excellent continental lambs to average 392ppk/£158.
Suffolk Lambs topped at £167 for a pen of 6, weighing 58kg from Mr A Straney. Mules peaked at £144 for 56kg from Messrs W J Whitfield, Pennine View.
Cheviot Mules realised £140 for 51kg from Messrs Ivinson, Skelling. A lovely pen of 13 Scotch Blackface hoggs from Messrs T A & A Dickinson, Netherscales, weighing 50kg realised £135.
January has brought record numbers of Ewes to Penrith again nearly 1000 up on the year. Several new vendors were present with one Ewe topping the sale at £290 with Texel’s shown by Newfield Farm, Allonby selling to PAK Mecca Meats. The whole sale averaged £109.50 with Horned Ewes, Mules and Plain Ewes taking the largest lift and being short of buyer’s requirements.
Numerous Suffolk Ewes £160 plus topping at £220 from A M Connor & Son, Skilmafilly purchased by Romford Halal.
Backmuir Livestock sold 22 Scotch Mules realising £122 with plenty of pens £110 - £118, up £6 - £8 on the week.
Horned Ewes sold very easily with Scotch Blackface to £112 and Swaledale from Messrs Greenbank, The Faulds to £90.
A ringside of 12 active buyers helped attract Ewes from Devon to Durham & Aberdeen to Anglesey and over 6 Irish vendors. Demand throughout the day from start to finish was exceptional. Spirited bidding kept competition and demand strong.
