Prime Sheep 131223

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale, with a cracking entry of 6,563 prime sheep, comprising of 3,200 prime lambs & 3,363 cast ewes and rams.

Lighter lambs were sharper to sell, however lambs lacking flesh and feed saw greater resistance. Topping today’s sale at £160 was a single Texel X lamb, weighing 77kg from M/s Hodgson, Green Farm. Top price per kilo was 371ppk for a pen of five lambs from M/s Lowis, Galloper Park. This was closely followed at 370ppk for a single lamb weighing 43kg at £159 from M/s Dickinson, High Knipe. M/s Nevinson, High House sold 31 heavy lambs to average a cracking £153. Suffolks topped at £147 from M/s Hird, Broomhills.

A bumper entry of cast ewes was forward once again, there is no truer saying than numbers bring buyers and buyers bring numbers. The sale topped at £300 for a Texel ewe from Tarn End, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Numerous Texels achieved in excess of £200, with Mr G Bell, Haas Side Farm, showing a consignment of ewes to average £227.50, topping at £275.

Plenty of pens of heavy ewes achieving £145-£155, topping at £158 for a pen of Suffolks from Backmuir Livestock.

A ring full of 34 English Mule ewes achieved £112 from Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall, purchased by JB Foods, Birmingham.

Horned ewes were regularly achieving over £80, topping at £89, with a pen of 18 realising £83 and a pen of 21 at £80.

Cheviot ewes sold exceptionally well with plenty of North and Hill ewes £90-£100, a pen of thumping North Country Cheviots achieved £119.

Cast rams were regularly £150-£170, topping at £190 for a Charollais from Tarn End, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

All-in-all a very strong trade from start to finish, holding well throughout the sale.
