Rearing Calves & Stirks 081223

On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 96 Rearing Calves and Stirks.

A smaller offering of calves and stirks was on offer with both sections exceptionally short of buyers’ requirements and demand high for all classes.

The sale topped at £890 for a cracking 5-month-old Limousin bull from Mr A Mason, Looking Flatt, purchased by Mr J Gibson, Petteril Bank. Stirks were a flying trade with huge interest around the ring, Messrs GL Armstrong & Son, Blunderfield East, sold a 9-month-old British Blue bull for £800, purchased by Mr B Atkinson.

Heifers topped at £800 for an 8-month-old Simmental from Mr J Findlay, Moorside Farm. Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £660 for a pair at 6-months-old from Messrs JH & E Ivinson, Plumpton Foot.

We also held our Christmas Calf show which was kindly judged by Mr R Woodhouse, Howe Farm, who awarded the overall champion rosette to the first prize bull from Mr D Graham, Greenah Cragg, a British Blue selling for £480 to Mr D Holgate. Reserve champion was awarded to the first prize heifer from the same home, a British Blue achieving £420 also purchased by Mr D Holgate.

Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, topped the calf section at £490 with a 5-week-old British Blue bull, purchased by Messrs J & A Wear, Milburn Grange.
