Christmas Prime Sheep - 06.12.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,736 prime sheep, comprising of 2,366 prime lambs & 2,370 cast ewes and rams.
Penrith & District Farmers Mart held their Annual Christmas Prize Show and Sale for Prime sheep a great show was presented, in front of our expert judge for the day Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill, Brampton a massive thanks to him for coming down. Also, a big thank you to our show sponsor Marsh Commercial.
Our overall championship was awarded to our first prize pen of 5 continental lambs from Messrs Hall, Inglewood Edge, realising £210, weighing 46kg purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn on behalf of Shan’s Group.
Reserve Champion was awarded to the 1st prize in the Mule section for a pen of 10 great cheviot mules from Messrs Ivinson, Skelling, weighing 54kg and achieving £147 purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Top price of the day came from our new class this year a single Beltex lamb, Messrs Hall, Inglewood sold this lamb for £235 which weighed 60kg sold to Mr S Wilson, Corby Hill he also purchased the second prized Beltex lamb, from the same home weighing 54kg, realising £220.
A good entry of 2,383 lambs were forward selling to average an SQQ of 286ppk. Again, meaty sheep proved easy to sell and weathered sheep showing signs of resistance. Heavies again sold well. Messrs Pollock sold a lovely single lamb weighing 51kg realising £160. Messrs Hird, Broomhills, 1st Prize pen of Suffolk lambs realised £151, weighing 55kg. Messrs Nevinson sold his run of 16 heavy lambs to average £152.
Another bonanza sale of cast ewes and rams was had, with all buyers present and all keen to purchase. An overall average of £99.98 was achieved.
Topping the sale at £260 was a single Texel ewe from Glenroyd Road, selling to Pak Mecca Meats. Six individual ewes achieved £250 per head, with quality selling with ease. First time vendor Mr G Dinnie, Aberdeen, had a consignment which averaged £140.83, topping at £250 for a pen of five.
Suffolk ewes averaged a staggering £125.97, topping at £170 from Backmuir Livestock, and Glenroyd Road. A pen of ten achieved £151 from Mr G Dinnie, numerous pens sold in the range of £140-£150.
A belting run of thirty English Mules from J W & G Roe, Reservoir Farm, Carlisle, achieved an average of £117, topping at £119 for fifteen.
Horned ewes were comfortably up £5 per head on the week, with Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck, selling Swaledales to £72. Scotch Blackfaced ewes sold to £102 for a pen of eleven from Mr L Graham, Perthshire.
Numbers seemed to tighten and demand is on the rise, orders were incomplete and more are required next week for our buyers’ demand.
Today’s sale included our annual Christmas Prime Show, kindly sponsored by Marsh Commercial. This year’s judging was in the very capable hands of Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill. Champion honours were awarded to the first prize pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge.
