Prime Sheep 291123

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,293 prime sheep, comprising of 2,876 prime lambs & 3,417 cast ewes & rams.

A great offering of prime lambs was forward with meat continuing to fly, heavier lambs took a big jump with 1,600 forward. A fabulous whole sale average of £126.30 was achieved, over £10 up on the year. The sale topped at £164 for a cracking single Continental lamb, weighing 56kg from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop Farm, this home also sold a pen of 14 weighing 54kg to £150.

A pair of brilliant Beltex lambs topped at 377ppk from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, weighing 39kg realising £147.

Suffolk lambs topped at £161 for a single weighing 61kg also from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop Farm, with this home selling 12 Suffolks in excess of £150. Cheviot Mules topped at £138 for a pen of 20, weighing 50kg from Messrs EJ Ivinson & Sons, Skelling Farm. Messrs Fleming & Wilson sold a pen of 20 Mules at 54kg to £136.

A bonanza entry of cast ewes forward once again with all buyers active from start to finish and a whole sale average of £95.41 being achieved.

The sale topped at £270 for a single Texel ewe from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn. A total of 46 ewes sold in excess of £200 with Messrs N & A Bainbridge, Laneside, Barnard Castle, averaging £226.36 for their run of 14.

Plenty of Suffolk ewes achieving £140-£150 with weight most easily sold. Mule ewes topped at £116 from Messrs TA & A Dickinson, North Netherscales. Backmuir Livestock sold a pen of 12 to £115 and a pen of 16 to £114.

Horned ewes took a sharper rise with most pens £2-£5 dearer on the week, Messrs Lowis, Waterside House sold a pen of 15 Swaledales to £72. Scotch Blackfaces topped at £86 for 14 from Backmuir Livestock, with all sold averaging £70.12, this home also sold North County Cheviots to £94 for 33 with a further pen of 31 realising £91.

A pair of Suffolk cast rams topped at £240 from S & A Ryder, Holme House, Ainstable.
