Prime Sheep - 22.11.23
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,023 prime sheep, comprising of 2,609 prime lambs & 3,414 cast ewes & rams.
Another good entry of 2,609 prime lambs were forward once again, well fleshed finished sheep sold with ease. A larger offering of grass-fed lambs was slightly easier on the week,
Top price of £153 was achieved for a cracking single texel lamb, weighing 59kg from Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree. Top price per kilo was 360ppk for 3 well-presented Beltex Lambs weighing 40kg, achieving £144 from Messrs Strong, Hewer Hill.
Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck sold another 2 Beltex Lambs, weighing 41kg realising £147/359ppk.
Messrs Brass, Low Row sold a brilliant run of 69 lambs to average 44.5kg/£140 per head.
Suffolks topped at £137 for 2, weighing 48kg from Mr D Pollock, Braithwaite Mill. Cheviot Mule Lambs continue to be popular topping at £131 on 3 occasions firstly for 2 pens of 20 & 24 weighing 53kg from Messrs Ivinson, Skelling and secondly for a pen of 16 at 51kg from Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck.
Numbers in the Ewe section are still coming forward thick and fast with a sale average of £94.91 topping at £280 ahead for Texel Ewes from Glenroyd selling to Pak Mecca Meats. Weight sold exceptionally well with all Suffolk Ewes sold averaging £120.52, with numerous pens £130 - £145, topping at £175.
More life in the Mule section with Messrs J & J K Spedding, Salter Hall, Frizington selling 14 English Mules to £119 and a pen of 13 Scotch Mules to £118 from Backmuir Livestock purchased by Mr A Dawson.
All classes held previous weeks demand and trade, as a result of a firm stable consistence trade several new vendors took advantage travelling the length and breath of the County.
