Prime Sheep 151123
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,493 prime sheep, comprising of 2,540 prime lambs & 2,953 cast ewes & rams.
More weathered lambs were brought forward, with meaty sheep remaining very good to sell. A whole sale average of 270ppk was achieved, with an SQQ of 288ppk and £127 /head.
Top price of 377ppk was achieved for a pair of exceptional Beltex lambs from Messrs Crozier & Langcake, High Moss - weighing 39kg and selling for £147. Top price per head was £160 for a cracking 45kg Suffolk cross Beltex lamb from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall. The same home also sold a pen of 10 cross 44kg Suffolk crosses, realising £135.
Export lambs remain exceptionally popular, regularly reaching 320-360ppk. Heavies continue to sell well with Cheviot Mules to £150 for a pen to 9 at 61kg from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor. Mule lambs from Messrs Fleming & Wilson weighed 53kg and sold to £126. More can be sold weekly.
The lift finally appeared in the ewe ring with all buyers present and eager for stock. The sale averaged £98.87, topping at £235 from Glenroyd Farm for Texels purchased by Mr James Linsley.
Plenty of ewes were comfortably £10 per head more, with heavy Suffolk ewes topping at £170 from Mr H McCrae, Huntley selling to J B Foods, Bradford.
Mules were regularly back over £100 ahead, topping at £122 from Backmuir Livestock closely followed at £118 for a pen of 20 English Mules from Messrs JJ Henderson, Park House purchased by Pak Mekka. A pen of 11 Swaledale ewes topped this section at £72 from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck selling to Pickstock Foods.
