Prime Sheep - 08.11.23
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,135 prime sheep, comprising of 3095 prime lambs & 3040 cast ewes & rams.
Another great Wednesday sale was held in Penrith with 3000 lambs sold to average £131, with all classes dearer on the week with a £10-£12 rise, and a SQQ average of 295ppk and 284ppk overall.
Numerous pens of quality well fed sheep sold in excess of £150 or 350ppk with a top of 390ppk for a pen of 8 weighing 41kgs realising £160 from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands the same home topping a £168 for a single Continental Lamb weighing 52kg.
Heavy lambs remain in demand topping at £160 for 65kg lambs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, with Suffolk lambs topping at £158 for a pen of 9, weighing 62kg, from Messrs Jenkinson, Dunfell House.
Cheviot Mule Lambs sold to £137 for a pen of 17 weighing, 52kg from Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck.
Messrs Hall, Inglewood Edge sold an outstanding consignment of 13 Beltex lambs to average £157. Messrs Brass, Low Row sold 87 great lambs to average 41.5kg realising 348ppk/£145.75. Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall sold a run of 41 lambs sold to average 39kg/265ppk/£143.50.
A bumper entry of cast ewes with competitors and active buyers making a brisk and fiery trade on a consistent basis. Several pens of ewes were comfortably making £200 plus, topping at £262 from Backmuir Livestock, Aberdeenshire. This was closely followed at £260 for 3 Texels from local breeder Mr G Pyman, Park View, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
All classes witnessed a sharp rise in trade and demand, with Texel and Suffolk ewes seeing the largest lift. Heavy ewes were regularly £140 plus with Suffolk X Texels achieving £158 and others comfortably £150 plus.
Plenty of horned ewes were back in the £70’s, topping at £89 with all sold averaging £64.87. Pen after pen of North County Cheviots realised £80-£90 ahead, topping at £116 for a pen of 26 from Backmuir Livestock.
Demand throughout the sale was even and consistent with these numbers comfortably handled each week. As proven from vendors travelling from Keith, Aberdeen, and Oakhampton, Devon.
