Prime Sheep - 01.11.23

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,695 prime sheep, comprising of 2,740 prime lambs & 2,955 cast ewes & rams.

Another great show of 2800 Prime Lambs forward with a far superior trade than predicted with a whole sale average of 274 sqq or 258 ppk (£120.10) per head. Topping today’s sale at 365ppk for a fabulous single Beltex lamb weighing 37kg achieving £135 pph to Mr R Vivers. Top price per head of £152 was achieved for another single Beltex lamb weighing 48kg from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge.

Meaty well fed lambs continue to sell with ease. Heavy lambs also sold exceptionally well. With Suffolks to £150 for 2 at 70kg from Messrs R Jenkinson, Dunfell House with pens of Continentals weighing 51 – 52kg easily £130 - £139. Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck sold a pen of 20 inside fed Cheviot Mule lambs weighing 52kg at £130. Trade continues to be exceptionally buoyant at Penrith with large numbers sold with ease and more can be sold to vendor’s advantage.

Penrith delivers once again with a further extended ring of buyers and returns holding strong considering previous sales depression this week. Our strong Aberdeenshire customers supporting our sales consistently scooped up top of the day once again. With Shethin Farm achieving £230 purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.

First time customer Mr T Fitzsimmons, Hexham sold a pair of pure Suffolk Ewes to £170 selling to J B Foods, Bradford. Strength and quality would most certainly be short of requirements and slightly sharper on the week.

Loads of demand for goats with them comfortably achieving in excess of £100 ahead topping at £130 from West Farms.

Cast Rams sold with ease with Mrs J Marshall, Kirkpatrick Fleming achieving £200 ahead for Texels purchased by Shan’s.

Horned ewes with flesh meat very similar returns to previous sales but plain leaner ewes would be slightly easier.
