Mule Shearlings & 2 Shears 2023

On Tuesday 5th September Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Great Annual Show & Sale of 7,001 Mule Gimmer Shearlings, '2' Shear Mule Ewes, Suffolk cross & Texel Shearlings & Ewes 3 Shear & above, kindly sponsored by Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.

A record entry was presented to a very busy ring of buyers travelling from all over the United Kingdom. All making the journey to purchase quality farmers’ consignments from the North of England. The standard throughout the sale did not disappoint! The day started with the largest number of show pens forward and every last one was presented and shown to an excellent standard.

Champion honours went to Mr S Ridley, Harthwaite House for the second year, with a pen of strong boned Mule shearlings, with great characteristics achieving £250 selling to the judge Mr M Bagley on behalf of Lincoln University.

Closely followed at £245 from M/s T R & P E Little, Low Moor Dyke with the third placed Mule Shearlings selling to regular customers M/s J J Henderson, Park House. This consignment of excellently turned-out shearlings all purchased as gimmer lambs through this mart averaged a staggering £222.95.

Two Shear Mule Ewes topped at £240 from M/s W & R Lawson, Stubbsgill with a pen of 15 very well-bred sheep, clean, with great neck & body selling to a repeat customer for numerous years, Mr S Booth, Settle with the total consignment averaging £193.25.

Next up went to M/s J Dickinson, High House with the Champion Pen, achieving £220, with this consignment leading in the averages of £195.50. All selling to our judge Mr John Dobson, White Kirkley Farm.

A marvellous entry of Continental Shearlings were forward topping at £450 from M/s Wales, Thackwood with a pen of Charolais X Beltex Shearlings selling to M/s James. This whole consignment averaged £381.76.

Champion in this section went to Mr K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields with a pen of excellent skinned Texel Shearlings. With bone and length selling to £300 to Mr M Heath, Gosling Terrace.

The early morning judging saw a quality gathering of show pens presented to this year’s judges Mr J Dobson, White Kirkley Farm (Mule 2 Shears), Mr M Bagley, University of Lincoln (Mule Shearlings) & Mr W Gribbon, Waterside Farm. (Continental Shearlings).

Over 40 pens of show sheep were forward, in the best of order and condition, a credit to all vendors.
