Prime Sheep 300823
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,755 prime sheep, comprising of 1,346 prime lambs & 3,409 cast ewes & rams.
Another good entry of prime lambs was forward with quality and meat still achieving a strong trade and export lambs every bit as dear as last week. The sale topped at £172 for a lovely Beltex X lamb, weighing 58kg from Messrs A & N Bennett, Hollins Farm, purchased by Mr Reuben Linsley.
A top price per kilo of 368ppk was achieved for a pen of 6 Continental lambs, weighing 38kg from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, realising £140. Some great consignments were on offer today with Mr J Mattinson, Green Farm, selling a run of 46 lambs to average 322.5ppk/£140.35.
Heavy sheep weighing over 50kg continue to be in demand with Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg, selling a pen of eight 56kg Suffolk lambs to £150, with this home also selling Cheviot Mules to £135 for 57kg.
Store lamb trade is proving to be extremely buoyant and lighter lambs would achieve stronger potential in this section.
Another monster show of ewes was forward with all selling to average £98.58, topping at £300 for a Texel ewe from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road, Northern Ireland, purchased by Mr James Linsley, still plenty of ewes achieving £200 plus with this section short of buyers’ requirements.
Heavy ewes are still regularly £140-£160 with Suffolks topping at £175 from Backmuir Livestock.
Some excellent pens of Scotch ewes sold in excess of £80, topping at £88, with a pen of 31 achieving £85 from Holme House, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
Cast rams topped at £180 for a Texel from RF Gargett, Bon-Vista, purchased by Mr Ditta.
Trade still held well with the grazing end becoming very easy to sell with several orders around the ring. Ewes travelled the length and breadth of the country to take advantage of our competitive ring.
