Prime Sheep 050723
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,369 prime sheep, comprising of 1,087 prime lambs, 442 prime hoggs & 1,840 cast ewes & rams.
A larger entry of lambs was forward with some brilliant runs of well-fed, well-turned-out sheep on offer. All buyers were present and eager to purchase with an SQQ average of 329ppk being achieved, up 30ppk on the week. The sale topped at 386ppk for a lovely pair of Beltex lambs, weighing 44kg from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, realising a top price per head of £170. This run of 34 lambs sold to average 360ppk/£146. Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, sold a fantastic run of 32 Continental lambs to average 366ppk/£152 per head.
Heavier lambs continue to be the easiest to sell with those weighing over 45kg seeing a flying trade. Suffolk lambs topped at £168 for 56kg from Messrs J Stalker, Ratten Castle. Topping the Suffolk section at 336ppk was a pen of 17, weighing 44kg from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. Mule lambs topped at £130 for a pen of 45kg from Messrs Bowe, Low Plains.
Lightweight lambs sold well, with a pen of 38kg Texels realising £145 (381ppk) from L & J Thompson, Lakeland View.
We’ve entered July with a bumper entry of hoggs, with all sold to average 255ppk overall and 261ppk SQQ. The sale topped at 338ppk for a pen of 3 Continental hoggs, weighing 45kg from Messrs CW & J Benn, Brownrigg Hall, realising £152 purchased by Mr J Khan.
A pen of 17 Beltex hoggs, weighing 41kg achieved 322ppk from Mr W Morison, Aberdeen, totaling £132.
Heavy hoggs weighing 67kg from Greengill Farm achieved £190 purchased by Lancashire Direct.
Full steam ahead in the ewe section with a leading average in the country of £119.19 for all sold, topping at £288 for a pen of 3 Texels from Backmuir Farm Livestock, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
All classes would be £10-£12 per head up on the week. All Suffolk ewes sold to average £127.55, with the heavier end £140 plus, topping at £170 from Backmuir Farm Livestock. Mule ewes topped at £139 from Mr N Marston, Millstone Moor, with all Mules sold averaging £103.94.
