Prime Sheep 280623

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,366 prime sheep, comprising of 684 prime lambs, 494 prime hoggs & 1,188 cast ewes & rams.

A smaller offering of sheep was forward due to the uncertainty in demand with the commencement of Qurbani, trade across all sectors was far better than anticipated.
Prime lambs averaged 297ppk/£128.50, topping at 353ppk for a lovely single Beltex lamb, weighing 43kg from Messrs Pollock, Braithwaite Mill, realising £152. A top price per head of £154 was achieved for a 61kg Rouge lamb from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm.

A total of 300 Suffolk lambs were forward, topping at £152 for a 54kg lamb from Messrs R & A Slack, Cockley Bank. Messrs PD Hird, Broomhill, sold a pen of four weighing 52kg for £150. Suffolks peaked at 309ppk (£142) for a pair weighing 45kg from Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey.

Hoggs with meat remained very good to sell, topping at £140 for a pen of 5 big Texels, weighing 63kg from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg, this home also sold a pen of 16 Scotch Blackfaced hoggs, weighing 45kg to realise £131. This consignment of 58 hoggs sold to average £134.31.
Cheviot hoggs topped at £135 for a pen of twelve, weighing 53kg.

The hogg section topped at 282ppk (£110) for a pen of 10 Continentals weighing 39kg from
Mr H Hird, Westray Farm.

A small entry of cast ewes was forward with demand equally as strong as last week. The sale topped at £255 for a pen of 3 Texel ewes from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, purchased by Mr James Linsley. An overall sale average of £98.07 was achieved, highly pleasing considering the previous day’s trading.

Horned ewes topped at £98 for Swaledales from Messrs Ridley, Woodhall, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
