Prime Sheep 210623
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,729 prime sheep, comprising of 664 prime lambs, 861 prime hoggs & 2,204 cast ewes & rams.
A sharper trade was seen for both prime lambs and hoggs, with lambs taking a fabulous 25ppk lift on the week. The sale topped at 438ppk for a cracking single Beltex lamb, weighing 39kg from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £171. A top price per head of £172 was achieved for a lovely Continental X lamb, weighing 45kg from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm.
Suffolk lambs topped at £159 for a single weighing 50kg from Messrs JC Thwaites & Co, Thorneycroft. A pen of 13 Suffolk X Mule lambs, weighing 43kg achieved 337ppk from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £145 per head.
Mrs J Marshall, Hermitage, sold a lovely run of 13 Continental lambs weighing 42kg to average £153.46/358ppk.
A huge entry of hoggs was forward for the end of June, nevertheless all classes were extremely well bid for, with all selling to average 248ppk/£110.98.
The sale topped at £154 for a pen of 3 Texel tup hoggs from Messrs D & R Cornthwaite, Lochmaben, purchased by Farmers Fresh Wales.
Heavy hoggs sold exceptionally well with Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg, selling a run of 60 Scotch Blackfaced and Continentals to average £153.72/280ppk.
A run of 62 well-fed Continental hoggs from Mr PJ Tindale, Darlington, averaged £118.84/279ppk/42kg.
In the ewe section demand still held well with all classes competitively bid for, with plenty of pens achieving in excess of £200. The sale topped at £290 for a superb Texel ewe from Mr SJ Pigg, Gaitsgill, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Quality is selling well with many more required to fulfil demand.
Heavy Suffolk X and Texel X ewes still achieved £130-£140 per head, with Mules regularly £120-£130 per head. Hill ewes sold as well as anything with plenty of pens of Scotch Blackface ewes realising in excess of £100 per head.
Strong rams regularly achieved £150 plus, topping at £180 on two occasions.
