On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,375 prime sheep, comprising of 765 prime lambs, 968 prime hoggs & 2,642 cast ewes & rams.
Penrith held their weekly sale of 765 prime lambs and 968 hoggs. The sale topped at 409ppk, weighing 43kg’s, for a lovely pair of Texel cross lambs realising £176, from Messrs Marshall, Hermitage. Top price per head came from the same home for a single weighing 49kg realising £184 purchased by Mr J Bosworth.
Messrs Gribbon, Waterside sold 4 lambs at 400ppk for 41kgs, achieving £164. Suffolk lambs topped at 333ppk for 3 weighing 42kg realising £140 from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall with Messrs Jackson, Croft House topping price per head with 3 Suffolks weighing, 48kg realising £152. An SQQ average of 298ppk was achieved, 296ppk all through.
Another large offering of hoggs for the time of year with heavy hoggs good to sell. Topping today’s sale at £172 for a pen of 12 Texel X Mules weighing 61kg from M/s Armstrong, Highrigg. With the same home topping the PPK with 2 Suffolk X Texel hoggs at 328ppk adding up to £164. Mules topped at £128 for 3 at 46kgs from M/s Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke. Blackface lambs topped at £145 for a pen of 7 weighing 54kg again from Highrigg.
Cast Ewes and Rams still keep coming in a large volume with a complete ring side of buyers forward ensuring we help our constant level trade.
The sale topped at £270 ahead for Texel ewes from Town Head Farm purchased by Mr James Linsley. Weight and meat still added up well with all sold averaging £105 ahead. A ring full of Welsh Mules from Mr P Baker, Lincolnshire achieving £126 purchased by Mr A Dawson with other pens regularly £112 - £120. Suffolk ewes still comfortably £140 plus topping at £150.
A ringfull of Scoth Blackface 2 shear wethers topped at £136 from Highrigg. With more of this category requested for the up coming Qurbani Festival.
