Prime Sheep 070623
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,756 prime sheep, comprising of 454 prime lambs, 956 prime hoggs & 2,346 cast ewes & rams.
A nice offering of prime lambs was forward with meaty lambs good to sell. The sale topped at 412ppk for a lovely Continental X lamb, weighing 43kg at £177 from Claremont Properties. Continental types are short of demand. Suffolks lambs topped at £166 for a pen of 10 weighing 52kg from Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank. Suffolk lambs topped at 356ppk for a pen of 11, weighing 43kg from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall realising £153. Messrs Metcalfe, Holme Farm run of 33 Texel X lambs averaged 358ppk/43kg.
Another great entry of hoggs was forward for the time of year, meat continues to sell extremely well and demand is very high. The sale topped at £187 for a pen of 6 cracking Continental hoggs from Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, with this home also topping pence per kilo at 342ppk for a pen of 5, weighing 52kg, realising £178. Scotch Blackfaces topped at 316ppk/£139 for 44kg hoggs from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall. Numbers were short for heavy hoggs with this section remaining popular, regularly achieving in excess of £150.
Ewes once again travelled the length and breadth of the country, with all selling to average £114.28, topping at £250 for a pair of Texels from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Suffolk ewes averaged £131.66, topping at £162 from Backmuir Livestock. A ring full of 19 Suffolk X Mules achieved £158.
Strong Swaledale ewes topped at £100 for a pen of 12 from Messrs Cockburn, Rakefoot, purchased by Pickstock Foods Ltd.
