Prime Sheep 310523
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,497 prime sheep, comprising of 468 prime lambs, 1,341 prime hoggs & 2,688 cast ewes & rams.
A great entry of lambs was forward for the time of year with meaty, well-finished sheep in great demand. A whole sale average of 332ppk was achieved. The sale topped at 390ppk twice, firstly for a pair of Texel X lambs, weighing 41kg realising £160 from Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall and secondly for a single Continental lamb, weighing 40kg achieving £156 from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. A top price per head of £179 was achieved for a single Texel lamb, weighing 55kg from Messrs BJ & SD Johnston, Nelson Hill.
A larger show of hoggs was forward with trade sharper for heavier sheep, the sale topped at 339ppk for a single Texel X, weighing 46kg from Mr RN Strong, Barton Hall, realising £156. A top price per head of £178 was achieved for a pair of Texel X hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, this consignment of 72 hoggs averaged £156.64. Heavy hoggs regularly sold between £150-£170 per head. Mules were in high demand, topping at £151 from Messrs DH & ER Strong, Well House, with Mules regularly realising in excess of £140. Scotch Blackface hoggs topped at £136 for a pen of 11 from Messrs RJS & DM Addison, Greystone House.
Ewes again travel the country from Lincolnshire to Aberdeen and across from Northern Ireland, the sale topped at £300 for a pen of 10 Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Mr J Linsley, with plenty of pens achieving in excess of £200 per head. A sale average of £126.21 was achieved, up £3.77 per head on the week.
Heavy ewes were regularly £160-£170, topping at £178 for Suffolk X Texels. Plenty of pens of English Mules were £130 plus, topping at £138 on 2 occasions. A pen of 10 Charollais ewes topped at £220 from Holme House, purchased by Mr D Kemp.
Strong horned & hill ewes regularly achieved £100 plus, topping at £118 for Scotch Blackfaces, with Swaledales to £108.
