Prime Sheep 240523
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,638 prime sheep, comprising of 147 prime lambs, 998 prime hoggs & 2,493 cast ewes & rams.
A larger show of lambs was forward with a sharper trade across the board and more buyers present and keen to purchase. The sale topped at 429ppk for a single Beltex lamb from Messrs ES & D Noble, Mill Farm. A top price per head of £187 was achieved for a fantastic 59kg Suffolk lamb from RJ Benson, Kettleside Farm. A total of 147 spring lambs averaged 355ppk overall, with an SQQ of 362ppk being achieved.
A smaller show of hoggs was forward with meat still good to sell. The sale topped at 355ppk for a pen of 3 Beltex, weighing 40kg, realising £142 from Messrs EA & N Thompson & Son, Bromley Green, this run of 11 averaged 346ppk. A top price per head of £193 was achieved for a Charollais X hogg from Tarn End. Mule hoggs topped at £150 from Messrs RC Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths. Scotch Blackfaces continue to fly, topping at 329ppk for a pen of 24 weighing 42kg from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains.
Another huge show of cast ewes was forward with all buyers keen to purchase. The whole sale averaged £122.49, topping at £285 for a pen of 7 Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
A total of 97 Charollais ewes sold to average £171.59, topping at £222 for a pen of 15 purchased by Mr D Kemp.
A pen of 8 super heavy Suffolk X Mule ewes achieved £170 from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. A consignment of well-fed Mule and Romney ewes from Mr P Baker, Lincolnshire, topped at £140 for Mules and a pen of 21 Romneys achieved £140 per head, purchased by Mr W Shearer.
Horned ewes topped at £119 for Scotch Blackfaces from Backmuir Livestock. Herdwicks achieved a top of £101 from Mr J Clark, Penny Hill Park.
All classes are required to keep the fast demand here weekly, with vendors from all four corners of the country taking advantage of the 14 active buyers.
