Prime Sheep 170523
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,641 prime sheep, comprising of 111 prime lambs, 1,376 prime hoggs & 2,154 cast ewes & rams.
A great show of prime lambs was forward, with both quality and condition on offer, with an average of 371p/kg being achieved. Topping this section at 429p/kg (£180) was superb Texel X lamb weighing 42kg from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall, purchased by Mr M Bowe. This consignment of thirty, mainly Suffolk X Texels achieved an average of £170.57 (385p/kg).
All lambs in the sale sold to average £161.17 per head, topping at £185 per head from Mr GT Falder, Macey Bank, with a fantastic 49kg Texel X selling to Mr A Dawson.
Lambs are needed in larger numbers now to fulfil the demands of our weekly buyers.
Plenty of hoggs came forward with meat still bringing in premium prices, but plain hoggs realised more realistic rates. Hoggs topped at 358p/kg (£154) for a pen of 43kg Texels from Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, bought by Mr A Dawson. This consignment averaged 333p/kg (£158.33).
Heavy, well-bred Suffolk X hoggs sold to a top of £180 per head from Mr R Downie, Newton of Craithie, Aberdeen.
Topping the hogg section per head was a pen of 65kg Beltex X Texels which realised £196 per head from Messrs W Murray & Sons, Prior House, Kirklinton, selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd. This consignment averaged £162 (315p/kg) for 51kg.
Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, sold a run of 112 Texel X hoggs to average £161.07 (300p/kg) for 53kg.
Horned hoggs topped at £150 per head for 48kg Scotch Blackfaces from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Irishope Plains, selling to Farmers Fresh.
A marvellous show of cast ewes and rams was forward, to average £126.63, this with a shortage of Texel ewes in the sale. The sale topped at £295 for a Texel ewe from Holme House, selling to Mr J Linsley. Pure Charollais ewes sold to a top of £265, with all Charollais ewes in the sale to average £177.33. Numerous ewes in the sale sold for £200 plus.
Heavy type Suffolks were still selling in the region of £155-£170 per head, topping at £185 for a pen of ten. All Suffolks in the sale sold to average £141.22. Another consignment of well-fed ewes from Mr P Barker, Lincolnshire topped the Mule section at £138, for a pen of twenty-seven, closely followed at £135 for a pen of twenty-seven Romneys.
Horned and hill-bred ewes sold exceptionally well, with Swaledales for Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, topping at £118. A pen of twenty-six Scotch Blackfaced ewes from Drumreach Farm achieved £112, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
