Prime Sheep 100523
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,887 prime sheep, comprising of 38 prime lambs, 1,558 prime hoggs & 2,291 cast ewes & rams.
Spring lamb numbers continue to be hard to find with demand still very high. The sale topped at £176 for a cracking Texel lamb weighing 57kg from Messrs Fisher, Dufton House, with the same home topping pence per kilo at 402ppk (£169) for a pen of four beautiful Texel crosses, weighing 42kg, many more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.
A smaller show of prime hoggs was forward, with meaty sheep keenly bid for. Leaner types were much harder to place. A top price of £200 was achieved for a pair of Beltex tups weighing 46kg from Messrs Morrison, South Bogbain.
The pence per kilo section topped at 407ppk for five great Beltex hoggs, weighing 44kg, realising £179 from Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe.
Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold a run of twenty hoggs, to average 342.40p/kg (£156.65).
Well finished hill sheep continue to sell with ease, topping at £150 for 50kg Cheviots from High Knipe. Scotch Blackfaces realised £143 from Irishope Plains.
A huge entry of cast ewes was forward to a complete ringside of buyers, all sold averaged £129.06. The sale topped at £300 a head for a pen of Texel ewes from Tarn End, purchased by Mr James Linsley. All Texel ewes in the sale sold to average £183.28.
Charollais ewes once again lead the way with the averages, achieving £186.01 for 143, topping at £235 from Holme House. A pen of fifteen achieved £215 from Messrs Wales, Thackwood.
A total of 119 cast ewes and rams in the sale sold in excess of £200 per head with Suffolk X Texels achieving £215 a head selling to Lancashire Direct.
A shortage of horned ewes with flesh were forward, nevertheless Scotch Blackfaced topped at £112 from Greenacres.
All in all, demand held extremely well with numbers required weekly to fulfil demand.
