New Fair Breeding Sheep 2023
On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual “New Fair” Prize Show & Sale of 6,293 Hoggs, Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs at Foot & Geld Gimmer Hoggs together with the “Troutbeck” Sale of Swaledale, Herdwick and Hill Bred Ewes with Lambs at foot kindly sponsored by Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping & PFK Rural.
A sale which dazzled everyone’s mind with demand and trade, surpassing all vendors expectations and quality fit for anyone. All day demand was huge with every last consignment being bid for with strong competitive bidding.
Opening the sale was aged and shearling ewes with lambs at foot topping at £225 a life from Messrs B I & M C Armstrong, Ghyll Croft with Millennium Bleu X Shearlings with lambs averaging £95.99, with pen after pen of strong outfits realising £100-£110 a life.
Champion honours and also receiving the top price in the Mule Hoggs and Suffolk lambs classes went to Messrs J Winter, Clickham Farm topping at £172, with superb well-bred hoggs with lengthy Suffolk lambs at foot, purchased by Messrs J J & A Brough, The Clappers.
All Mule hoggs with singles sold to average £112.92 with many pens up £10-£12 on average on the year.
An excellent entry of Mule Geld Hoggs was on offer averaging £145.87. Topping at £159 from Messrs Dent & Greenop. Messrs J R & A Middleton, Stone House, sold 150 to average £151.33. The continental section was fiery for all classes and a consignment from Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire, stood out ozzing with class. Topping at £170 for excellent well-presented sheep purchased by Messrs J W Musgrave, Cardew Hall.
The largest rise would be in the Troutbeck section with Swaledales with both Texel and Mule Lambs regularly £60-£70 per life.
All in all, a huge success was witnessed helped by the massive audience of buyers and the quality on offer. All classes are required for our next sale The Second “Troutbeck” and “Latter” Fair sale on Tuesday 23rd May, entries close noon Tuesday 16th May.
