Prime Sheep - 03.05.23
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,720 prime sheep, comprising of 51 prime lambs, 1,943 prime hoggs & 2,726 cast ewes & rams.
A great show of quality lambs was forward with all springers in high demand with numbers short of requirements nationally.
Today’s sale topped at 410ppk for a 39kg Suffolk x lamb from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, levelling at £160. Top price per head of £179 with a beautiful Texel Lamb, weighing 46kg from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. Prime Lambs sold to average 365.4ppk/368.33sqq overall. Many more could be sold to vendor’s advantage.
A good entry of 1943 hoggs were forward with fed hoggs continuing to sell exceptionally well. Today’s top price of 418ppk for 2 Beltex lambs, weighing 39kg, from Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
Top price per head of £192 was achieved for a pen of 9 lovely Beltex hoggs, weighing 50kg from Auchengray Farm. Messrs Savage, Petteril Green sold 24 great Continental Hoggs to average £173.67. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow sold 72 to average £165.38 with a pen of 17 Blackfaced hoggs, weighing 46kg selling to £149 or 324ppk.
Cheviot hoggs sold to a 349ppk/£150 for a pen of 6 weighing 43kg, from Messrs Siddle, Honeypot.
Spring lambs slow to come forward, hoggs are still required on a weekly basis.
A huge entry of cast ewes and rams were forward to a very busy ringside of buyers. Demand reached a seasonal high with all sold averaging £131.02 up a further £6.91 on the week. The sale topped at £300 ahead on behalf of 3 vendors are selling to Mr D Towers on behalf of Pak Mecca Meats Ltd.
A total of 160 cast ewes and rams sold in excess of £200 ahead with all Texels sold averaging £198.40. Charollais ewes leading the way with a pen of 12 achieving £250 and all sold averaging £174.96.
Mules comfortably up £10 ahead on the week with all sold averaging £120.06 topping at £142 from Messrs Wood, Longlands.
Horned ewes were in short supply with Messrs Fleming and Wilson, Low Mill, selling 16 Swaledales to £118 purchased by Pickstocks Foods Ltd
A pen full of monster pure Suffolk ewes from Mr H McCrae, Aberdeen achieved £220 with others achieving £220-£235 ahead with numerous pens £160-£170.
Pure Charolais rams from Donemana, County Tyrone realised £230 purchased by Mr D Kemp and numerous other pens £200 plus.
All in all, numbers are required for next week’s sale with demand expected to be equally as strong.
