Prime Sheep 260423

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,539 prime sheep, comprising of 24 prime lambs, 1,418 prime hoggs & 1,097 cast ewes & rams.

Our first show of Spring lambs came forward this week, with twenty-four on offer. This section topped at 381p/kg for a 42kg Suffolk cross lamb from Messrs J Stalker, Ratten Castle.
Messrs Noble, Mill Farm, sold two Texel lambs to £180, with one weighing 51kg and the other at 52kg.
All Spring lambs sold to average 377p/kg.
A smaller show of prime hoggs was on offer and met a fierce trade for meaty sheep. A whole sale average of 306p per kg/£145 (320p/kg SQQ).
Topping the hogg section at 436p/kg (£170) for a 39kg Beltex from Messrs Hodgson, Woodfoot. Top price per head on the day was £200, this was realised for a pair of 49kg Beltex hoggs from Auchengray Farm.
Once again, some great runs of prime hoggs were forward. Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, had a great run of twenty-six Continentals to average £172.92 (374p/kg) for 46kg.
Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, sold one hundred predominantly Texel hoggs to average £171, topping at 433p/kg (£182) for a pen of twelve weighing 42kg.
Blackfaced hoggs sold to a top of £149 for a pen of ten weighing 52kg from Messrs RJS & DM Addison, Greystone House. Messrs Carrick, Irishope Plains, topped at 323p/kg for a pen of twenty weighing 43kg.
Cheviot hoggs topped at £160 for eight weighing 53kg from Messrs W & SE Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall.
Mules proved good to sell, topping at 306p/kg (£147) for six weighing 48kg, and regularly selling for £140 plus.
Swaledales sold to a top of 296p/kg (£142) for a pen of thirteen 48kg hoggs from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House. Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, sold a pen of ten at 54kg for £145.
A reduced entry of cast ewes was forward to our complete ringside of buyers. Topping this section at £298 was a Continental ewe from Messrs AH Ritson, Ireby Hall, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Charollais ewes topped at £215 for a pen of five, with this breed averaging £195 for all twenty-three sold.
An overall ewe sale average of £124.39, up £11 per head on the week.
Heavy ewes were much sharper on the week, with pure Suffolks achieving £190 from Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff.
A shortage of horned ewes was on offer, with Swaledales topping at £118 for a single ewe from Messrs RB & DJ Bousfield, Renwick. Mr DA Macgillivary, Torgormack sold a single Scotch Blackfaced ewe to realise £120.
Cast Rams topped at £200 per head from Holme House, with a pen of ten Continentals, purchased by Mr D Kemp. All Rams sold to average £141.38.
