Prime Sheep 220223

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,921 prime sheep, comprising of 2,118 prime hoggs & 1,803 cast ewes & rams.

A surprisingly sharper trade than expected was seen in the hogg ring with an SQQ average of 248ppk being achieved. The sale topped at £150 for a pair of 71kg Suffolk X Mules from Demesne, Cumwhitton, selling to Mr N Lomax.

Topping per kilo went to Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, with a pen of Beltex X Texel Hoggs weighing 41kgs, totalling £137/334ppk selling to Vivers Scotlamb, with this consignment averaging £134.88/321ppk.

Mule hoggs topped at £124 for a pen weighing 58kgs from Messrs H M & R ivinson & Son, Hole House.

Cast Ewes sold to a very sharp trade with all selling to average £99.46, topping at £230 for a pure Texel Ewe from Messrs R Pigg & Son, Gaitsgill Farm, purchased by Mr W Shearer on behalf of Pak Mecca Meats.

A shortage of Texel, Suffolk and Continental ewes were forward and many more are required on a weekly basis. A pen of 21 Suffolk X Mule ewes from Holme House achieved a staggering £151 per head.

Plenty of cast rams were forward, regularly achieving £140-£170, topping at £180 for a Texel from Messrs Moore, Softley Farm, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
