Prime Sheep - 12.01.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,037 prime sheep, comprising of 2,122 prime hoggs & 1,915 cast ewes & rams.
A very mixed show of Prime Hoggs were forward, with a slightly easier trade, but nevertheless demand for quality was very strong. The sale topped at 358ppk for a pen of Texel X Hoggs, weighing 40kg’s, realising a £143 from Messrs S & A Moore, Mains of Balhall, Brechin, purchased by Mr M Bowe.
A run of 50 well turned out Texel X Hoggs from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck, averaged 315ppk / £136.24 for 43kg’s. Topping it 351ppk with a pen of 41kg Hoggs, realising £144.
Suffolk Hoggs topped at £151 for 59kgs from Messrs Lowis, Waterside selling to Mr J Tucker, with his consignment of heavies averaging 242ppk / £132.56.
Horned Hoggs topped at £114 from Messrs Elliott Bros, Harbour Flatt with a pen of 16 / 46kg’s selling to Mr A Dawson.
A bonanza trade in the Cast Ewe ring was witnessed, with the whole sale averaging £103.07 peaking at £242 from Backmuir Livestock, with a Texel Ewe purchased to Mr J Tucker. With a total of 143 Cast Ewes selling in excess of £150 ahead. Cast Rams topped at £188 for a Charollais X also from Backmuir Livestock selling to Mr J Tucker.
Leading in the averages were Mr A J Bell, Thethwaite Farm with a run of 20 averaging £191.67. Horned Ewes definitely saw the sharpest rise with Mr D Barker, Derwentdale achieving £118 for a pen of Scotch Blackfaced selling to Mr N Lomax and the same home sold a ring full of Herdwicks to £87 purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Backmuir Livestock also sold a ring of 58 Scotch Blackfaced realising £90 ahead. Plenty of good Swaledales to £90 ahead, topping at £108 from Messrs Taylor & Gill, Fell End.
