Annual Hill Bred Ewe Show & Sale 111021

On Thursday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their annual show & sale of 6,399 uncrossed & crossed Swaledale, Herdwick & Cheviot ewes, shearlings and gimmer lambs, kindly sponsored by PFK Land Agency & Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.

A top class show entry of draft Swaledale ewes, shearlings & gimmer lambs & Herdwick ewes & shearlings drew much praise from the judges Mr J Tully, Burncroft Farm, Mr K James, Midtodhills and referee Mr T Brogden, Helbeck. The Herdwick section was judged by Mr J Relph, Greystoke.

Our final backend sale of breeding ewes was a huge success from start to finish, the ring was packed with onlookers, vendors and purchasers from Devon to Aberdeen, resulting in an amazing trade, much higher than vendors expectations.

What a day for the Lightfoot Family, receiving Champion honours with their pen of ten Swaledale 2 & 3 crop ewes, they came into the ring with great presence and strength, realising £500 per head, purchased by Mr EG Bulman, Northallerton. Messrs Lightfoot also achieved first place in the shearling class, also a pen of sheep that can only be described as of the highest quality. This pen went on to achieve a new market record of £700 per head, selling to long established Swaledale breeders Messrs R Marwood & Sons, Long Green. The full run from Gillside averaged a staggering £213.29 up over £40 on the year for 299 sheep sold.

Second placed ewes from the Wear Family, Howe Green achieved a top in the ewe section for a pen of 10 two crop ewes, strong powerful sheep with great characteristics, realising £510 per head. This consignment of 165 averaged £194.79.

Credit must go to all vendors for the quality and presentation of all sheep forward.

Congratulations to Jean and Derek Wilson, Anns Cottage who were awarded the Racy Ghyll trophy for the first placed pair of Herdwick ewes.

The annual consignment of 1-2 crop Cheviot ewes from Mr R Weir, Chapel Farm, attracted plenty of interest from the local area, also to regular customers from Devon. This run topped at £171 per head for a pen of big, boozy Cheviot ewes selling to Messrs A D & J Harrison, Holmerook.

A very pleasant surprise was in the Herdwick section with all ewes sold averaging £68.96, topping at £130 per head from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside with a pair of cracking show ewes, never the less hard fell drafts from Messrs Barker, Noran Bank achieved £72 per head for 3 Shear Ewes.

Gimmer lambs averaged a hefty £70.41, up £12 on the year, topping at £100 per head from Messrs GD & J P Nelson, Hedwynds for a pen of 10 strong lambs selling to Messrs M & T F Graham, West Foreshields.
