Prime Sheep Report 100321

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,372 prime sheep, comprising of 1,510 prime hoggs & 1,862 cast ewes & rams.

Records have most definitely been smashed today with an SQQ average of 316ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 412ppk/£172 a head with 44kg Texel hoggs from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, selling to Mr M Bowe. This run of Texel and Herdwick hoggs averaged 358ppk.
This was very closely followed at 410ppk (£160) for a pen of 39kg Beltex hoggs from Mr MH Elliott, Espland House, selling to Yorkshire Halal. This run averaged £147.50/388ppk.

Thirteen pens of hoggs sold in excess of £160 a head with an overall sale average of £135.70, a market record. Heavy hoggs sold to extreme returns with Messrs TD Hewetson, Scales Hall selling a run of 58.5kgs to average £151.10 with 55kg Texels selling to £157.

Messrs W & S E Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a run of 52 heavy (45-47kgs) Texel hoggs to average a staggering £153.54 (309ppk).

A run of 57 Beltex X and Beltex X Cheviot Hoggs from Messrs R & J.M Ridley, Ranbeck achieved an unbelievable average of £150.63/348ppk.

Commercial and hill bred sheep met a bonanza trade, with prices being unbeatable in any other way of marketing. English Mules form Messrs A Tiffin & Sons, Wham Head Farm achieved 298ppk for 43kgs, totalling £128. Swaledales from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House peaked at 286ppk for 44kgs, totalling £126 a head, with the same home selling 57kg Swale tup hoggs to £132.

Serious consideration needs to be taken when marketing your prime hoggs this spring!!

A marvellous entry of cast ewes and rams was forward to an extended ringside of 12 buyers, ensuring all classes were most definitely dearer, with horned and mule ewes taking the largest lift.

The sale topped at £198 for 4 Texel Ewes from first time customer, Mr J R Gibbs, Toftcombs Farm, selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd. A total of 323 Texel ewes forward averaged £135.14

A total of 240 Suffolks sold to average £123.13 topping at £156 from Tarn End, plenty of Suffolk X Mules selling between £130 and £138.

Swaledale ewes topped at £92 a head for a pen of 12 from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, selling to Mr N Lomax. Herdwicks sold to £85 a head from Aspatria Hall.
Scotch Blackfaced from Messrs J Whitton, Crewgarth achieved £90 a head, selling to Mr C Wright.

The demand for cast ewes and rams is growing here, week in week out, with many more required.
