On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 105 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
The best calf and stirk sale was witnessed for a long time here today with new vendors taking advantage of the later start time of 10am and nearly thirty active buyers around the ring.
The sale topped at £790 for a seven-month-old, suckler-bred British Blue cross bull stirk from Cottage Farm, County Durham, purchased by Messrs J & N Blaylock, Longtown, this was closely followed by a superb dun-coloured Charolias heifer, eight-months-old, achieving £770 from the same home. This run of Charolais cross stirks averaged £664.12.
Messrs DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, sold four-month-old British Blue cross British Friesian bull stirks to a staggering £600, purchased by Mr A Benn, closely followed at £570 for others from this home.
Mr K J Burne, High Barn, sold a run of three-month-old Limousin heifer stirks to average £420, topping at £470 purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Young calves were in short supply for all classes, with four-week-old British Blue calves realising £380 from Messrs B & GC Donald, The Ling. Aberdeen Angus bull calves, four-weeks-old, sold to £300 from Messrs Hurford, Bramery.
