Today we held our weekly sale of 2,510 cast ewes and rams. A very pleasant surprise was witnessed in the ewe section with all classes up £20 per head on the week, with an overall sale average of £183.41 being achieved. The sale topped at £345 from loyal weekly supporter, Mr William Morison, South Bogbain, always turning out excellent fed stock, for a pure Texel ewe, purchased by AJ Meats, Birmingham, with a further 23 ewes selling in excess of £300. Mr G Bell, Haas Side Farm, sold a run of 31 Texel X ewes to average a mind boggling £267.45, topping at £325 on three occasions. For the first time ever the Suffolk section has averaged over £200, selling 420 ewes to average £205.97, topping at £270 with larger pens realising £236 x14, £228 x17, £228 x12, £218 x29, £217 x17. The best Scotch Mule ewes topped at £206 for a pen of 17 from Mr B Duffton, Huntly. Horned ewes were a long way short of buyers’ requirements, topping at £158 for a pen of 29 Scotch Blackface from South Bogbain, with Swaledales to £144 from Mr MW Bousfield, Hegdale. Rams again sold with great ease, topping at £276 for a pair of Texels, with numerous pens £250 plus. All classes are needed to fulfil the demand every week here at Penrith. Today we held our weekly sale of 777 prime lambs, 424 prime hoggs and 561 lightweight collections of hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 1,762 head. Weight continues to attract premium prices, with handy-weight sheep showing resistance. A whole-sale average of 427p/kg (£186) was achieved. Topping today’s sale at 525p/kg (£231) was a pen of four Texel lambs weighing 44kg from Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall. This was closely followed by a single Suffolk lamb from RJ & RJ Benson, Kettleside Farm, weighing 46kg and selling at 522p/kg (£240). A top price per head of £265 (457p/kg) was paid for a single 58kg Texel from Messrs JE & LM Raine & Son, Ravenwood. This was closely followed by a pair of 55kg Suffolks from Messrs DW Cannon & Son, Low Abey, which sold for £262 (476p/kg). This same home sold a superb run of 49 well-fed lambs to average 466ppk/£228.55/49kg. The top consignment average of the day was achieved by RJ & RJ Benson, Kettleside Farm, whose five lambs averaged £236.80 per head. Once again, Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall, sold a brilliant run of 60 Texel and Suffolk lambs, averaging 43kg, 460p/kg and £200.65 per head. Pure Cheviots sold to £250 for 54kg lamb from Dalveen Lamb. Lambs continue to be in strong demand, and more are needed each week to satisfy buyer requirements. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have lambs to sell. In the hogg section a reduced entry of 424 was forward, with heavy hoggs continuing to sell well. A whole-sale average of 343p/kg (£165) was achieved. The sale topped at £236 for three 68kg Suffolk hoggs from Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke with this home selling other Suffolk hoggs to £220 for 58kg. They also achieved 400p/kg for a pen of six 50kg hoggs, which realised £200 per head, while another pen of two weighing 55kg sold for £210 per head. Our next sale will be held on Wednesday 1st July.
