On Wednesday 23rd September, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 2,959 prime lambs and 299 lightweight hoggs and lambs, taking the total prime sheep entry to 3,258 head. It was another brilliant day at Penrith, with a bumper show of 2,959 prime lambs meeting a flying trade throughout. The overall average was 342p/kg, or 347p/kg SQQ, and £165 per head—£18.50 ahead of the corresponding week last year. A superb selection of well-fed, heavyweight lambs was forward. Topping today’s sale at £220 was a 76kg Texel lamb from Mr Rodgers, Ireland. Mr Matty Strong, Hewer Hill, followed closely at £218 for a 68kg lamb. The top price per kilo was achieved by a pen of nine indoor-fed Beltex lambs from M/s Gardner, Glebelands, weighing 42kg and selling for £212, or 505p/kg. Mr W Gribbon & Co sold another pen at 480p/kg, weighing 40kg and realising £192 per head. Mule lambs soared to £170 for 52kg, or 327p/kg, from M/s T Trafford & Son, Peterhouse. Cheviot lambs sold to £180, or 340p/kg, from the Hall family, Inglewood Edge. Mr K Forester & Son, Cobble Hall, sold some very well-fed Dutch Spotted lambs, with 54kg lots achieving £194 per head. The second consignment through the ring, from M/s T E Irving & Son, East Cliff, hit the jackpot: their run of 47 Suffolk and Texel-cross lambs averaged 57kg and sold for £200 per head, or 346p/kg. On Wednesday 23rd September, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,592 cast ewes and rams. There were excellent numbers in the ewe ring, and an increased ringside of buyers ensured that all classes were £5–£10 dearer on the week. A total of 23 ewes sold for more than £300. The sale topped at £375 for a tremendous pure-bred Texel from Mr J Adaw, Raemoir Road, Aberdeen, purchased by Romford Halal. This was closely followed at £305 by an ewe from Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, purchased by A J Meats, Birmingham. The same home also achieved a record price of £190 for a pure Scotch Blackface ewe. The sale averaged £161.56 overall, with 421 Suffolk ewes averaging £189.85. The Suffolk section topped at £278 for a huge half-bred ewe from Town Foot Farm, with many others selling from £220 to £240. Mr B Dufton sold some of the finest Cheviot ewes, topping at £255 for a single, followed by nine at £238 and 15 at £213. The same home sold 15 Scotch Mules to £200. Mr T A Byers, Ellen Bank, sold eight Scotch Blackfaces to £165, while Swaledales reached £130 for Messrs Marrs, Manor Farm. The best rams sold for £250 and above, topping at £315 for a pure Suffolk from Messrs T E Irving & Son, East Cliff. It was another very successful sale, with strong buyer attendance attracting both trade and numbers. The next sale will be held on Wednesday 30th September. On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Sale of 10,000 North of England Mule Gimmer Lambs and Cheviot Mule Gimmers, generously sponsored by Eden Farm Supplies, PFK Rural, I’Anson Quality Feeds & Marsh Commercial. The early morning judging saw another record entry of 27 pens of show sheep forward, all well worthy top pens, which were presented to this year’s North of England Mule Gimmer lamb judges Mr C Hewitt, Eskew Beck Farm, Miss R Thompson, High Hall, & Miss J Harrison, Sceugh, acting as referee, with Mr M Bewley, Mid Farm, judging the Cheviot-Mules. Credit must go to all vendors for the quality of the consignments turned out and we hope all purchases go on and do well for everyone. One of the largest ringsides of buyers ever seen at Penrith generated a tremendous buzz and an electric atmosphere, getting the day’s trading off to a flying start. Cheviot Mules set the pace, averaging £205.19 per head, with only seven pens selling for less than £190 per head. Mr J. R. Weir of Elva Plain Farm topped the sale at £280 per head and also presented the champion pen, which was pure class. The pen was purchased by the judge, Mr M. Bewley of Mid Farm. Mr Weir’s consignment of 150 went on to average £222 per head. Overall, this section once again proved extremely popular, with many more required to fulfil demand. Orders ranging from 100 to 200 head remained unfilled. North of England Mules achieved phenomenal returns, with many new buyers taking advantage of the best-bred Mules from the Eden Valley that never disappoint. The overall sale average was £197 per head, up £44 on the year, with this strong trade consistent across all vendors. Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, topped the sale at £600 per head with a tremendous pen of well-bred sheep displaying excellent conformation. They sold to regular purchaser Mr J. Winter, while the consignment achieved a superb average of £243 per head. Next at £340 per head were Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, with a pen of tremendously powerful lambs purchased by Messrs W. Richardson & Son, Ghyll House. This was the largest consignment, averaging £205 per head. New for 2026, the Colin Lowis, Waterside House Trophy for the best run of more than 100 Mule Gimmer Lambs was awarded to Messrs S. & W. Maughan, Street House. Their run of 440 lambs averaged £216 per head, with only one pen selling for less than £200 per head and topping at £275 per head to Mr P. Jones, Ludlow. Special mention must go to Messrs Strong, Well House, whose run of 516 averaged a colossal £203 per head. A credit to the owners, who bred sheep of such natural quality and tremendous power without supplementary feed and with very little dressing. Bonny running lambs through to full-faced sorts comfortably realised £190–£198 per head throughout the sale. Tupping lambs sold from £210–£225 per head, with the top pens achieving £250–£300 per head. An overall sale average of £196.16 was achieved, this £43 up on the year! Topping the sale at £600 per head went to Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, with their Champion pen of 10 superb well-bred lambs going on to be purchased by Mr J Winter. In the Cheviot Mule section, a buzz of buyers helped create a buoyant average of £205.17 for 1099 sold. Topping this section at £280 was the Champion pen, a pen of pure class, from Mr JR Weir, Elva Plains selling to the judge Mr M Bewley. The second placed lambs from the same home achieved £260, selling to Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire.
