On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,856 prime sheep, comprising of 2,081 prime hoggs & 2,775 cast ewes & rams. A smaller show of 2,081 prime hoggs were forward. A more seasonal show was on offer resulting in a whole sale average of 321ppk or 335sqq or £149.580 per head. Topping todays sale at £215 a head came for a pen of 3 fantastic Beltex hoggs weighing 45kg also achieving the top ppk average of 478ppk from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall purchased by Mr M Bowe. Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green closely followed at 477ppk for a single Beltex hogg weighing 44kg achieving £210. Heavy hoggs sold to £202 for a pen of 5 weighing 50kg again from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall. Mr M Metcalf sold a 65kg Suffolk x hogg to £195 with all heavy sheep dearer on the week. Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Son, High House Farm sold a great run of 28 heavy hoggs to average £183.25. Messrs Gillespie, Quarry Gill sold a pen of 9 well finished Cheviot hoggs weighing 56kg to £162. Messrs T J & D Dixon, The Shire sold a ring full of 25 Swale hoggs weighing 46kg, achieving £138. Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck sold Cheviot hoggs to 355ppk, weighing 44kg achieving £156. Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains topped with Mules for a pen of 35 selling for 351ppk weighing 41kg achieving £144. A strong ringside of buyers are forward at our weekly sale and all classes of hoggs continue to be well bid for. More numbers can easily be sold. Another great selection of ewes forward with over 200 Shetland ewes present but never the less all in all another huge average was achieved of £174.43. Topping at £395 a new genuine market record from Mr G Bell, Haas Side, Lockerbie with a superb Texel x ewe purchased by Mr D Kemp on behalf of Romford Halal, Essex. With this consignment of 23 averaging £314.39!! A grand total of 31 ewes sold in excess of £300 with Suffolks achieving this from Cairn Loch Farming purchased by JB Foods, Bradford with 476 sold to average £210.17. Mule ewes sold exceptionally well with numerous pens still £200 ahead plus topping at £216 for a pen of 19 Scotch Mules from Tann House, Aberdeen with larger pens achieving £196 x25, £196 x20, £190 x16, £188 x12, £186 x23. Horned ewes are holding their value exceptionally well and if anything up again £2 - £4 ahead. Topping the Scotch Blackface at £160 for a pen of 23 from Glenmore Estates with other pens to £146 x29, £145 x11, £139 x12, £132 x19, £122 x20, £120 x20, with all sold average £126.13. Cast rams topped at £285 for a superb heavy Suffolks from Messrs D S & P Wells, Hallgarth purchased by JB Foods, Bradford. With a pen of 5 averaging £275 from Mr J Clark, and £270 for 5 from Holme House. Once again, all buyers were present and keen to purchase, numbers will be required comfortably for next weeks sale.
