On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held our fortnightly sale of 231 Rearing Calves and Stirks forward. Arguably the dearest sale across the board for all stock sold. Thanks to all vendors and purchasers for supporting our sale. Topping the days trading at £1290 per head came for 11 month old Blue Heifers from Messrs P Wilson, The Wath, the same home sold 2 Blue bullocks at £1270. Hill bred bullocks from Messrs Stobbart, Croglin High Hall sold to £1240 for Beef Shorthorns at 8 months old. A great entry of Dairy sired bulls and bullocks with Whitestone Farm selling bulls at 12 months to £980. Fleckvieh bullocks sold to £1030 for a 10 month old from Nether Collinhurst. Messrs T W Fawcett, Little Blencowe sold a run of 19, 10 month old Hereford bullock and heifers to average £1094. More could have been sold to vendors advantage. Calves continue to boom topping the sale at £920 came for a lovely Limousin bull at 4 months from Messrs Bowness, Cliburn Hall. Donaldson Dairy sold Blue bulls to £890 for 4 months also. Heifers sold to £820 for a pair of 4 months old from Messrs C Dent, Bridge End. Young calves were another exceptional trade with Messrs W Threlfell & Sons, Plumpton Head sold 21 Blue calves at 2 – 3 weeks old to average £464. A bumper entry of B & W calves were forward with a blistering trade had, 38 Holstein bulls sold to average £446. Topping at £550 from C Dent, Bridge End. Today we held our sale of in-lamb breeding sheep and geld gimmer hoggs, to include dispersal sales from Mr JH Slack, Brougham Castle & Messrs TW & C Holmes, Langton Gate. A great entry of genuine, honest breeding sheep was forward to a packed ringside of buyers, all very eager to purchase with demand meaning many more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage. The sale topped at £395 per head for a pen of 12 Texel X Beltex gimmer shearlings from Mr JH Slack, Brougham Castle, carrying 4 singles and 8 twins, due 16th March onwards, purchased by Mr SL Atkinson, Augill House Farm. This was closely followed at £380 for a pen of 10 Texel X 2-shear ewes from the same home, scanned 2 single & 6 twins, purchased by local neighbours Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor. This run of 161 Texel X Beltex ewes and shearlings averaged a staggering £330.28. The trade of the day went to Messrs TW & C Holmes, Langton Gate, with their consignment of full-mouthed Mule ewes, scanned over 200%, achieving £360, £340 & £330 per head. Some superb geld hoggs were forward from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge, achieving £290 for ultimate Beltex’s, selling to Messrs Dent, Elm House, this home also sold Suffolk X hoggs to £200 per head, all vaccinated for Enzo & Toxo.
