Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 1,293 prime lambs, 682 prime hoggs and 558 lightweight hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 2,533 head. A very positive trade was seen in the lamb ring, with an overall sale average of 402ppk achieved. Trade was considerably dearer than at the start of the week. The sale topped at £246 per head for 61kg Suffolk x Texel lambs from Messrs Graves, Hesket House, selling at 409ppk to Mr M McIntyre. The same home went on to average 52kg, £216.53 per head, or 413ppk. Leading the averages was Mr G Pyman, Park View, who sold 21 Texel x Mule lambs to average £223.33 per head, or 429ppk, at 52kg. Topping the price per kilo was Mr R A Cricton, Rottington Hall, with excellent 45kg Beltex lambs selling at 488ppk, totalling £220, and purchased by Mr G Lomax. The same home also sold 48kg lambs to £224. An end-of-season show of hoggs was forward, with very little meat on offer. The best Cheviot hoggs topped at £200 for 60kg from Mr J Page, Farmanby, while Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge, also achieved £200 for 64kg hoggs. Hoggs carrying meat remained between 340ppk and 360ppk. From next week, hoggs will be sold after the cast ewes, while remaining in a separate section. Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 2,803 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday. It was another bonanza in the ewe ring, with every animal sold averaging £180.15. Most classes were up a further £5 to £8 on the week. The sale topped at £375 for a tremendous pure-bred Texel ewe from Mr C Abernethy, selling to regular customers Romford Halal, with several other lots realising £300 and above. Charollais ewes from the same home achieved £320, selling to Pak Mecca Meats. A total of 541 Suffolk ewes came forward, averaging an outstanding £199.94. The section topped at £258 on two occasions for pairs of pure ewes from Messrs W G & B Wilson, Under Cragg, and Mr C Abernethy. Other larger pens sold to £232 for 17, £232 for 15, £227 for 15, £212 for 11, £212 for 14 and £210 for 35. Demand was strong throughout the ram section, topping at £275 for a tremendous pure-bred Texel from Messrs G & HR Shields, Tarn House. Exceptionally well-fed Beltex tups sold to £260 from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge. Horned ewes were well short of requirements, topping at £162 for Northumberland Blackfaces from Wanwood Hill, Alston. Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, sold 24 fed hill ewes to £159, while the best Swaledale’s reached £150 from Mr M Allan, Knock Hall. Overall, it was a very dear trade for all classes. Farmers are encouraged to draw ewes forward and make the most of the trade while it remains at these levels. All classes are required every week at Penrith to fulfil buyer demand.
