Another fantastic day in Penrith & District Mart. 2856 Hoggs were forward with another lift of over £6 resulting in huge pounds per head average or £170.25 sqq of 378ppk overall £345.92 with only 923 sheep in the sqq average. Topping the days trading at 485ppk for 40kg realising £194 from Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey with the same home selling 36kgs realising £170 or 472ppk. Top price per head of £204 came from Messrs T E Irving & Son for 2 achieving 57kgs with another 2 at 56kgs equalling to £203 or 363ppk. Top consignment average or £190.77 came from Messrs F Savage, Petteril Green selling 25 fantastic Beltex and Texel Hoggs. Messrs T E Irving sold there run of 52 mainly Suffolk hoggs to average £188.77. A pen of 19 Suffolks from this home sold 57kgs to £190. Mule Hoggs continue to boom here in Penrith selling to a top of £185 for a pen of 20 weighing 60kg from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House. Messrs H M & R Ivinson, Hole House sold his run of 59kgs to average £180.32. Mule Hoggs sold to £374ppk for a pen of 23, weighing 42kgs for clipped sheep from S Robinson, Thrang Cragg. Pure Herdwicks from Messrs Bland, Clea Hall sold a pen of 13, weighing 38kgs to realise 382ppk. All classes of stock can be sold to vendors advantage here in Penrith. On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,503 Cast Ewes & Rams. Very possibly one of the dearest trade seen across the whole of the country once again with 3503 sold with a great total of 715 selling over £200 ahead. Topping at a mighty £355 went to Mr B Dufton, Aberdeen with a superb pure Texel selling to A J Meats, Birmingham. Closely followed at £350 for one of the very best Beltex from Mr J Clark, Northern Ireland purchased by Yorkshire Halal, Ossett. With a pen of 4 pure Texels from Mr M McNally achieved £318 again going to Yorkshire Halal. Suffolks stole the show with 608 sold to average £191.64!! Topping at £275 for 6 Suffolk x Texels from Mr S McSwiggan purchased by Romford Halal, Essex. Larger pens sold to £230 x12, £228 x12, £215 x15, £212 x19, £211 x11, £208 x12, £206 x12, £206 x16, £202 x13 these aren’t top prices these are pens full of ewes! Mule ewes finally took the lift with the best Scotch Mules to £198 for 9 from Mr B Duffton, selling to J B Foods, Bradford. Closely followed at £190 with the larger pens to £180 x12, £174 x12, £170 x16, £168 x26, £165 x24, £161 x12 (2), £160 x20, £160 x18, £160 x32. All in averaging £153.89. Horned ewes up to £150 from South Bogbain with Scotch Blackface. A serious shortage of well fed horned ewes forward. Swales to £124 from Messrs C W & Y Dixon, Haresceugh Castle and the best Herdwicks to £120 from Mr S Hutcheson, Peebleshire. Cast rams realised a peak of £250 from Mr M McNally, selling to A J Meats with all others meat £200 plus. Keep your ewes coming over the next few weeks as the trades expected to hold and if not firm. Young bulls topped at 320.5ppk/£1865.31 for a Dairy Shorthorn weighing 582kgs from Messrs R M & L A Woodhouse & Son, Howe Farm. Clean Cattle topped at 391.5ppk for a superb Limousin X British Blue heifer, weighing 707kgs, realising £2767.91 selling to Mr R Pearson, Wholesale Butcher. A sale average of 255ppk was achieved, topping at a new market record of 419.5ppk for a superb pure 6-year-old British Blue cow from Messrs J E Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm, purchased by Mr C Anderson, with this consignment of 3 pure British Blue cows averaging £3802.90/404ppk. A 7-year-old, well-fed Saler X Limousin cow achieved a mighty £3060.68/322ppk from Messrs E J Ivinson & Son, Skelling Farm, purchased by Mr D Barker. Stock bulls, through the TB exempt section, topped at £3495.56/283.5ppk for a Dairy Shorthorn, weighing 1233kg from Messrs H & E M Hunter & Son, Berrier. 7 year old British Friesian cows averaged £2320.99 from Mr D W Mallinson, Lodge Farm weighing 994kgs and Mr W Schug, Bongate Moor selling a 6 year old parlour cows through the TB exempt section to £2283.60 / 259.5ppk selling to Mr L Fell.
