Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,577 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday.
Much greater numbers came forward today with all buyers forward ensuring all classes spiked bidding and competition from the word go. All sold averaging £151.29 topping at £320 went to Mr D Coulter, with superb pure Texel ewes selling to AJ Meats, Birmingham.
Plenty of continental bred ewes achieving £220- £240, the best Suffolk X Ewes achieving £252 and all 410 averaging £191.22. M/s JS & JA Bird, High Wreay Farm sold Suffolk Mules to £232 and averaging £219.62, that includes a pen of 6 Texels at £270.
The very best horned ewes sold to £158 from M/s EJ & RJ Wear, Howe Green for Swaledale’s and the same home with other pens to £130 and £118.
Cast rams topped at a market record with a pair of pure Suffolks from Mr M Mcnally, Jonesborough at £380 ahead selling to Shan UK LTD and a pair of pure Texels to £350.
