Today we held our fortnightly sale of calves and stirks. Numbers continue to roll into Penrith, 243 calves and stirks were forward with younger calves a storm of a trade. The sale topped at £1,460 for a pair of strong Charolais heifers, 11-months-old from Messrs H & EM Hunter & Son, Cape Farm, with another pen of 3 realising £1,420. Messrs JJ, JM & JR Milburn, Stock Farm, sold 5 lovely Saler heifers, 13-months-old to realise £1,330. Messrs A & A Little, Hollands, sold a packet of 4 Aberdeen Angus and British Blue stirks, 11-month-old to average £1,407. Messrs Dent, Kaber Fold, sold a pair of 7-month-old Beef Shorthorn bullocks to £1,330. Bulls topped at £1,200 for a dairy-bred British Blue, 7-months-old from Olivia Robinson, Burblethwaite. Calves continue to fly with no let off in demand or trade, topping at £1,120 for a British Blue bull from Messrs Sherwen, Low Thornley Farm. Donaldsons Dairy, Threapthwaite Farm, sold a 4-month-old British Blue bull to £1,010, purchased by Messrs JH & ME Grainger, Mirefold Farm. Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, sold a Limousin X bull at 7-weeks-old to £930. Heifers topped at £820 for a British Blue, also from Donaldsons Dairy. Calves on milk were regularly £600 plus for all classes. Dairy-sired calves topped at £790 for a Montbeliarde bull from Messrs Sherwen, Low Thornley Farm. On Wednesday 13th May, PDFM had a bumper day, with well over 8,000 sheep through the gates. Comprising 156 spring lambs, 3,700 prime hoggs, 823 lightweight lambs and 3,878 cast ewes, the sale equated to 8,557 head. A much larger offering of 156 spring lambs was forward and, with another big rise in trade and demand, the sale averaged 460ppk or 475sqq. Topping the day’s sale at 533ppk, and with the top price per head of £240, was a brilliant Texel X lamb from M/s ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet. Also selling to £240 was a single Suffolk lamb weighing 71kg from M/s Graves, Hesket House. M/s TF & GL Pollock brought forward their opening run of spring lambs, selling 12 at 46kg to average 476ppk or £219 per head. Spring lambs are needed weekly now to fulfil demand. Moving into hoggs, a blistering show of sheep was forward to average £208.31, exactly £60 up on the same week last year, with 2,000 more sold. The sale averaged 410ppk overall, or 428sqq, the sale topped at 529ppk for a pen of 3 Beltex at 43kg, selling for £222 from Mr G Cartmel, Hollands. The top price per head of £268 came for an outstanding pen of 6 at 68kg, or 394ppk, from J Bowling & Sons Ltd, York. This home sold a total of 52 sheep at more than £260. Suffolk hoggs soared to £260 for a pen of 13 at 74kg from T Hetherington, Staffield Old Hall. J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope, sold a pen of 13 at 44kg to 455ppk or £200 per head. Mules sold to £232 for a pen of 21 at 63kg from M/s G & R Dawson, York, the same home selling Cheviot hoggs to £230 for a pen of 15 at 59kg. J Carrick’s Blackface topped at £220 for 12 at 57kg. M/s Lightfoot, Gillside, sold Herdwicks at £208 for 5 at 54kg. Bobsy Tyson travelled up with some excellent Herdwick hoggs, full of flesh, with a pen of 24 at 40kg selling for 425ppk and his run of 70 selling to average 403.9ppk or £166 per head. Top consignment came from T Hetherington, Staffield Old Hall, with 80 selling to average 65kg at 390ppk or £254.76. Hoggs look set to continue in strong demand, and numbers are needed for next week. On Wednesday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,877 Cast Ewes & Rams. A new record average was achieved for this volume of numbers, with all sold averaging £186.64. A top price of £390 ahead was achieved by Mr M McNally, Jonesborough, with a pen of 4 pure-bred Texels selling to weekly supporters Romford Halal, Essex. A grand total of 39 sold for more than £300 ahead. In addition, a new record for cast rams was set, with Mr W Bethell, County Armagh, achieving £380 for an extreme pure-bred Texel selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Suffolk stole the show again, with 717 sold to average an eye-watering £213.42, topping at £292 from Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, with superb Suffolk x Texels. Numerous pens sold for £240 plus, with larger pens achieving £260 x16, £248 x17, £245 x19, £238 x11, £238 x19, £230 x10, £226 x26 and £226 x15. Scotch Mules led the mule section again, with 18 achieving £220 from Mr B Duffton, Huntly, closely followed at £216 for 15 from South Bogbain. Horned ewes were completely bonkers, with M/s EJ & RJ Wear, Howe Green, topping at £180 for a huge Swaledale ewe. Very closely followed at £178 was an extremely delighted Mr Peter Bland, Knott Houses, selling 9 pure Herdwicks, nearly £40 more than expected!
