Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 2,344 prime lambs and 504 lightweight hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 2,848 head. Another outstanding day’s trading at Penrith Auction saw 2,344 lambs forward, averaging £156.49 per head—£15 more than the corresponding week last year—and a whole sale average of 331p/kg. Heavy sheep looked set to become harder to sell earlier in the week, but there was no let-up today, with prices as strong as we have seen for several weeks. The day’s trade topped at 439p/kg for a superb 41kg lamb from R A Crichton, Rottington Hall, which realised £180. Numerous pens sold for more than 400p/kg. The top price per head was £210 for 61kg Texel lambs from R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe. A number of lambs sold for more than £200. Mr M G Hunter, Oaklands, sold a cracking pen of 14 Texel lambs, weighing 62kg and realising £207 per head. Suffolk lambs topped at £198 for 58kg from W J Whitfield, Pennine View, while the Bindloss family, Shap Abbey, sold 44kg Suffolk lambs for £158, or 360p/kg. Numerous vendors averaged more than £170 for their entire run of lambs this week. P E & M A Holmes sold 15 lambs to average £185.93, with Mr M G Hunter close behind, selling 40 to average £184.73. Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,699 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday. Never before have ewes sold dearer in the first week of September but today proved exceptional. Most classes were £5–£10 dearer on the week, with all ewes sold averaging £163.88. Topping the sale at £360 was an outstanding pure-bred Texel ewe from Mr B Duffton, Huntly, purchased by Mr J Linsley. A further 21 ewes sold for more than £300, with another 147 exceeding £250. All heavier ewes were well above £200, with the best Suffolk ewes reaching £235 from Messrs Pollock, Braithwaite Mill. Many pens realised £210–£220. Some excellent pens of Scotch Mule ewes were forward, topping at £212 from Mr B Duffton. His exceptionally large ewes followed closely at £198 for a pen of 14, while Mr H McRae sold a pen of 15 for £190. Horned ewes saw a more modest rise but remained short of requirements, topping at £170. Some strong Northumberland Blackface ewes were forward, with plenty selling from £130 to £150. Beltex ewes averaged £218.02 despite carrying comparatively little weight and topped at £248 from Shap Abbey. Mr T Mackenzie, Drumreach Farm, returned to Penrith with a colossal pen of 14 North Country Cheviot ewes, which achieved £190 apiece, while plenty more sold from £160 to £170. Cast rams were on fire, with the best reaching £300 on three occasions, and numbers fell well short of requirements. All jokes aside, many more could have been sold to the vendors’ advantage. This resulted in our highest-ever sale day clearance rate. The sale featured what was possibly one of the largest entries of tractors and plant machinery, including diggers and telehandlers, that we have seen for many years. These categories proved exceptionally easy to sell, and we strongly encourage vendors to take advantage of the strong demand at our next sale on Friday 20th November. Leading the sale at £42,000 was a locally owned 2011 John Deere 7930, presented in excellent condition. Numerous other items achieved prices in the £20,000 to £30,000 range, reflecting the outstanding trade throughout the day. One of the standout lots was a Massey Ferguson 390T, registered on an N plate and in excellent original condition. This tractor attracted genuine and spirited bidding from several interested buyers before selling for £26,000 to a local Massey Ferguson enthusiast. Once again, plant machinery sold exceptionally well. Vendors, particularly tractor dealers and machinery businesses, should take note of the strong demand in this sector and consider consigning suitable items to future sales. Highlights included a pair of Wacker Neuson DW60 dumpers each achieving £13,500, while three Thwaites 1-ton dumpers sold for £4,800 apiece and dozers selling to £22,600 with a Caterpillar LGD4. Loadalls in excellent condition hit a top of £34,500 with a 68 reg Manitou 737 heading its way to Southern Ireland. Plenty of 46T diggers exceeded £10,000 and regularly realised £12,000 - £15,000. Topping at £23,000 was a Hitachi zx85. Clean farm machinery sold exceptionally well but the number of these items forward was a long way short of buyer requirements with even feeder wagons achieving very sharp returns, which is rare. Topping at £12,000 was a very original and clean bull feeder from a dispersal sale. The sale also included a very clean and well maintained Herbst 32ft Cattle Box which achieved £19,200, £8000 more than the reserved price.
