Another brilliant sale day was held here at Penrith Auction on Wednesday, with a strong entry of 692 prime lambs, 1,230 prime hoggs and 471 lightweight hoggs and lambs, equating to 2,393 prime sheep sold.
A strong entry of spring lambs, including more quality-fed sheep, resulted in a wholesale average of 450.45ppk SQQ, or £200.67 per head. Topping today’s sale at 521ppk was a beautiful 42kg Texel x Beltex lamb, selling for £219 from Messrs Pollock, Braithwaite Mill. This was closely followed at 520ppk by two Texel lambs, weighing 40kg and achieving £208, from E S & D Noble, Mill Farm. The top price per head of £272 was achieved for 59kg Suffolk lambs from Messrs Graves, Hesket House. Texel lambs topped at £264 for two weighing 56kg, or 471ppk, from Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire. Weight continues to excel, with all classes dearer on the week and 45kg lambs showing a £10 lift. Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, sold some cracking Rouge lambs to £240 for 49kg, or 490ppk. Suffolks topped at 498ppk for 51kg, achieving £254 from Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire.
Top consignment averages were as follows:
26 at £239.31 for 49kg, or 480ppk – Messrs Graves, Hesket House.
16 at £228.63 for 45kg, or 501ppk – Mrs J Marshall, Hermitage.
14 at £227.79 for 50kg, or 446ppk – Holme House.
6 at £224.17 for 48kg, or 487ppk – M/s Pollock, Braithwaite Mill.
A large entry of 1,230 hoggs came forward to a far brisker trade throughout, resulting in an average of 360ppk. Topping the day’s sale at £258 was a pen of four, weighing 59kg and realising 437ppk, from Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot. Mr T Hetherington, Staffield Old Hall, closely followed with a pen of 15 weighing 67kg and achieving £252. The same home topped the p/kg section at 450ppk for a pen of seven weighing 48kg, or £216. G Cartmell sold 53kg Beltex hoggs to 447ppk, or £237. T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke, once again brought an excellent run of fed hoggs, selling Mule hoggs to £196 for a pen of 12 weighing 50kg, and Scotch Blackface hoggs to 387ppk for a pen of 12 weighing 45kg and achieving £174.
