On Friday, Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held its monthly sale of dairy cattle, with an outstanding entry of 241 head of dairy cattle of all classes.
This was our largest entry to date, with vendors travelling from as far afield as Inverness-shire and Halifax, alongside strong support from vendors across the whole of Cumbria.
Holstein cows topped the sale at £3,000 for an excellent second-calved cow from C Scott & E Harryman, Low Farm. Calved just 29 days, she was currently yielding 38 litres and attracted strong bidding.
Second-calved British Friesian cows from our regular supporters, Messrs Livesey, Lowick Bridge Farm, also met with keen demand.
Heifers reached £3,000 on three occasions from Mr C Dent, Bridge End, with a very honest run of ProCross heifers. All were 2-3 weeks calved and yielding well in excess of 30 litres, with the consignment averaging an impressive £2,860.
A quality consignment of Holstein heifers from Mr D Graham, Greenah Cragg, currently milking through the robot at 36 litres, sold to a top of £3,000, with the leading animal purchased by Messrs Connell, Grange Farm.
Over 70 dry cows were forward and attracted tremendous interest throughout. Trade topped at £2,750 for a second-calved cow from first-time vendors Messrs A & G Innes, Inverness-shire. Due in early August to the Aberdeen Angus, she sold to Messrs KA & PJ Woodman & Son, Hill House, while others from the same consignment closely followed at £2,700.
The Innes family also sold 20 in-calf heifers, carrying calves to either sexed semen or the Aberdeen Angus and due to calve at the end of August. They regularly achieved £2,400-plus, with the top price reaching £2,700.
Bulling heifers proved exceptionally popular, topping at £1,650 from Messrs W Williamson, Barrowmoor, with an excellent run of well-bred British Friesians. Others sold to £1,600, with the top purchaser being Mr T Shaw.
Messrs R Forrest & Son, Low Rutter, sold a consignment of 31 British Friesian heifer stirks, averaging a very positive £817. The trade peaked at £1,020 for a pen of four, with plenty of others selling in excess of £900.
Our next sale will be held on Friday 21st August and will feature our Late Summer Show & Sale. Entries for this sale close on Friday 14th August, and we look forward to another strong catalogue.
