On Friday 8th May, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its quarterly collective sale of tractors, machinery, plant, livestock equipment and small tools.
Another record-breaking entry saw an impressive 2,710 lots go under the hammer, with bidding commencing at 9:00am and continuing through to 8:50pm. An outstanding clearance rate of 81% was achieved, far exceeding expectations given the current trade conditions across the UK and further afield.
The sale also attracted a record number of purchasers, with 510 successful buyers securing stock, including strong support from both Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.
Entries were received from 388 vendors across the United Kingdom. Leading the sale was a Hurlimann XB105 loader tractor, registered on a 74 plate and showing only a few hundred hours, which sold for £43,000 and headed into the trade across the water.
Close behind at £41,000 was one of the final lots of the day, a Case 165 Puma on a 20 plate, which also sold to Southern Ireland.
Plant once again delivered one of the strongest clearance rates of the day, topped by a JCB TM320S on a 67 plate at £33,000. Also drawing strong interest was a tidy 2011 JCB 3CX with just 1,650 hours, which sold well above reserve at £32,000.
Farm machinery sold freely and, as ever, remained well short of buyers’ requirements especially for clean well-kept implements, with much more needed for our August sale. Topping this section at £16,500 was a New Holland BB9060 square baler.
Another hugely successful day’s trading delivered a clear message to vendors: sell live. The atmosphere, energy and competitive bidding on site continue to create genuine competition and strong returns.

On Wednesday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 4,091 cast ewes and rams.
A huge number of ewes were forward once again, far more than expected, and a wholesale average of £181.23 was achieved. Most classes held very steady on the week.
Topping at £390 was Kedzlie Farms with a tremendous pure Texel ewe, sold to Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers, with a further 51 ewes selling for more than £300. Leading the averages were first-time customers M/s DJ Wilson, Jubilee Farm, North Yorkshire, with 13 Texel x ewes averaging £292.77. Closely followed at £278.94 were M/s G E & V H Slater & Sons, Whiteley Hey Farm, with 37 Beltex x Texel ewes topping at £295 for a pen of 11.
A grand total of 799 Suffolk ewes were forward, averaging a colossal £199.07 and topping at £280 from Mr W Morrison, South Bogbain, selling to A & D Meats, Burnley, with numerous Suffolks selling more than £230.
There was plenty of demand among the Mules, with Mr H McRae, Aberdeenshire, achieving £212 for Scotch-bred ewes and North of England Mules to £208 for 11 from Mr B Taylor, Thwaite Hall, selling to JB Foods, Bradford. Some of the best pens sold well in excess of £190, with £198 for 19, £197 for 17, £192 for 12, and £184 for 50.
Horned ewes remain well short of requirements, topping at £170 for a pure Herdwick from M/s Pollock, Low Braithwaite Farm. Very close behind at £166 was a pen of 22 Scotch Blackface from Mr A J Bell, Thethwaite Farm, while Mr T J Noble, Mellgates, topped the Swaledales at £166.
Cast rams also achieved a strong average of £212.67, topping at £280 and closely followed by £275 for a pen of 30 from Holme House.
