On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their monthly sale of 82 Dairy Cattle.
One of our largest entries yet with literally something for everyone. Some truly excellent Holstein Friesian heifers forward today with an ultimate Black heifer from Messrs Fisher, Moss Thorns Farm, Newtonmoss Dalmore Violet calved 21 days and giving 24L. A very correct heifer all round with an exceptional udder selling to local purchasers Messrs
T F & G L Pollock, Towngate.
First time vendors Broadmeadows Farm sold a real milk machine, a heifer only 24months old giving 40L selling to Mr J R Tiplady, with this consignment averaging £2850.
British Friesian cattle topped at £3200, a superb Black natural heifer. Square and honest from Messrs R Forrest & Son, Low Rutter. Some really classy cows forward with Messrs Livesey, Lowick Bridge Farm, Ulverston achieving £2800 for a second calved cow giving 30L, calved 7 days selling to Mr W H Brass, Crosby Ravensworth. Closely followed with an unbelievable stylish Ayrshire second calver achieving £2700.
Commercial pure bred Jersey heifers from Mr N Hitchen, Crib Farm, Halifax topped at £1480 and closely followed at £1450 selling to Messrs Bland, Abbott Lodge.
A consignment of 20 grazing type Jersey cows, mostly mid lactation with the odd few fresh averaged £1254.44 from Town Head Farm, Ayrshire topping at £1520.
All in all, a very buoyant trade throughout the sale with demand for quality exceptionally strong and a long way short of requirements. A serious shortage of good Holstein heifers and cows with many more required to fulfil demand.

On Friday Penrith & District Farmers Mart held a dispersal sale of Pure Limousin Breeding Cattle on behalf of Mr I Ward, Dry Holme, Silloth.
A very busy ringside of buyers gathered ensuring a very sound trade throughout, the sale topped at £4900 with the final lot of the day Norman Ted a 4-year-old stock Bull, in very natural condition selling to local farmers M/s D & A Dalgleish, Bulls Head Farm.
Cows with calves topped at £4200, with Lot 3 Briarlea Rose with a Bull Calf at foot selling to M/s Metcalfe, Home Farm.
Incalf cows achieved a top of £3600 a very good well-bred cow, 208-day Incalf to Norman Ted selling to M/s Marrs, Manor Farm.

On Friday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held our fortnightly sale of 245 calves and stirks.
Another brilliant entry of 245 calves and stirks was forward, with a brilliant trade to go with it. Stirks were on fire for all classes, topping at £1,930 for a cracking British Blue bullock, 17-months-old from Messrs A & W Johnson, White Fold, with this home also selling a pen of 3 Limousin bullocks to £1,910, this consignment of 12 sold to average £1782.50.
Miss E Elliott, Wyngarth, sold a great pen of 4 British Blue bullocks, 12-months-old to £1,610. Messrs FR Crew, Gall Farm, sold a run of 10-month-old Aberdeen Angus bulls and heifers to average £1,310.
Mr D Stephenson, Bents Lathe Barn, sold a pair of 12-month-old British Blue heifers to £1,520. Harrison Livestock Services, sold a 5-month-old Charolais heifer to £1,060, with this homes run of 5 averaging £1,032.
Mr TW Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm, sold a run of 12 Ayrshire bulls, 9 to 10-months-old to average £845.
More stirks are needed to fulfil demand, don’t miss out as trade is flying.
A bumper show of calves came forward, topping at £1,060 for a super 14-week-old Simmental bull from Messrs Graves, Priory Farm, with the same home selling other bulls to £910 and heifers to £790 for Simmentals.
Messrs PH Thompson & Partners, Greengill Head, sold a run of 8 beautiful Aberdeen Angus bulls to average £831.25.
Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, sold 4 week old Limousin bulls to £685 and Aberdeen Angus at the same age to £625. Friesian bulls from this same farm also sold to £415.
Messrs Threlfell & Sons, Plumpton Head, sold their run of 19, 2 to 3-week-old British Blues to average £512.
Dairy sired bulls sold with ease, with Montbeliardes at £720 for 4 months from Mr C Dent, Bridge End. Black & Whites from the same home sold to £540 for 2. Many more Black & Whites were £450 plus.
