On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its fortnightly sale of 91 cast cows. Prices eased, but buyers were out in force and remained keen to secure supplies of cows. The top price per kilogram was 311.5p/kg for a young Limousin cow from M/s Strong, Well House. Weighing 590kg, she realised £1,837.35 and sold to Mr D Barker. The highest-priced animal overall was a 918kg Holstein cow from M/s H & E M Hunter & Son, Berrier. She realised £2,262.87 and sold to Mr G Chapman. First-cross Limousin cows from M/s Holliday, Clea Mire, topped at £2,234.31 (275.5p/kg), while M/s IS & CA Mounsey, Town Head, sold Charolais cows to £2,268.40 (267.5p/kg). Cast bulls peaked at £3,119.05 for a 1,166kg Simmental from M/s E J Ivinson & Sons, Skelling. A seven-year-old Limousin bull from M/s Raine, Fog Close, weighing 962kg, realised £2,688.79. Both sold to Mr D Barker. On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 185 store cattle. A great sale for store cattle here at Penrith, with strong stores a flying trade. Topping today’s sale at £2,505 was a superb 26-month-old Limousin bullock from Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park. Mr AJ Glendinning, Dacre Banks Farm, closely followed at £2,435 for Charolais bullocks of the same age. Messrs Strong, Well House, topped the heifer section at £2,295 for a 24-month-old. Once again, Aberdeen Angus cattle sold well, with Mr TJ Noble, Mellgates, selling bullocks to £2,255. A beautiful packet of heifers sold for £2,115 for three from Messrs M Ridsdale, Yew Tree Farm. Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield, sold a Friesian bullock to £2,015. Numerous numbers of cattle easily sold over the £2,000 barrier.
