On Saturday 13th December Penrith & District Farmers Mart LLP held an onsite sale of the entire cattle and sheep pens, stalls and handling equipment, including races, walk planks, weighbridges and crushes from the old Newark Auction Mart, Great North Road. Interest sparked from as far as Southern Ireland, Aberdeenshire and as far as Sussex from a range of traders, local farmers and several auctions. Prices were firm and achieving strong demand throughout the sale. The sale included several inputted items with a Mercades Acro 3243 8x4 Tipper Blower Wagon, 2017 with 520397km on the clock achieving £20,500. A John Deere 6530 on a, 2008 Reg achieving £20,000.

Today we held our fortnightly sale of 105 Rearing Calves and Stirks. A smaller offering of calves and stirks was forward to finish the year, thanks go to all vendors and buyers who support our sales throughout the year. The sale topped at £1,500 for a pair of 14-month-old bulls from Mr J Linsley. Messrs DW & DM Elliott, Bank House, sold a pair of Limousin bulls at 11-months-old to £1390, purchased by Mr K Hunt. Mr TW Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm, sold a pen of 7 Hereford bullocks, 8-10 months old to £1040. Calves continue to fly, topping at £780 for a beautiful 7-week-old British Blue bull from Turnbull Farming, purchased by Mr C Riley, this home also topped the heifer section at £710 for a lovely dark British Blue, this consignment of 4 sold to average £712.50. Aberdeen Angus bull calves topped at £760 for a pen of 3 from Messrs GL Armstrong & Son, Blunderfield East, with this home selling 4 to average £755. Dairy-bred calves sold with ease, with a Montbeliarde bull realising £500 from Messrs GP & JG Simpson, Knock Cross. Holsteins topped at £270 for a 2-month-old bull from Messrs TR & PE Little, Low Moor Dyke. Wow what a day here in PDFM a record entry of 4,414 Prime Lambs descended the most seen here at PDFM just short of 10,000 sheep in total sold. A huge thank you must go to all staff who worked extremely hard throughout the day. Aswell as all our vendors who helped during the day and supporting us throughout the year. Once again numbers were no issue with a trade on fire from start to finish and buyers battling hard for stock. Numerous new faces continue to flood into Penrith we thank them for making the trip. A total of 117 different vendors on show. Christmas certainly came early with a whole sale average of 328ppk or 342sqq equating to £152.60 per head. 49 – 57kg lambs showed the strongest lift on the week with lightweights again a flyer. Top price of £200 per head came for a super 60kg Beltex x lamb from Messrs H G Jackson, Littlebeck the first time back in Penrith in many years. Top price per kilo of 457ppk came for regular stalwart family the Bindloss’s, Shap Abbey selling 2 Beltex lambs weighing 37kg to £169. Two other vendors sold sheep over 350ppk. Firstly, from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside for a pen of 9 Beltex lambs weighing 40kg realising for £182 or 455ppk. Secondly Messrs Gardner, Glebelands sold a pen of 5 Beltex lambs weighing 43kg achieving £196 or 456ppk. 135 sheep sold in excess of 400ppk a credit to all vendors bringing forward quality well fed sheep. Messrs W Murray & Son, Prior House sold 44 super lambs to average £182.20. 12 vendors sold consignments to average over £170. The Story Family up at Newbiggin Farms sold 139 lambs to average 49.5kg at 335ppk or £166.13. Suffolk lambs sold to £185, weighing 66kg from Messrs T K & E M Story, Jacksonrigg Farm with Suffolks to 352ppk for a pen of 13 weighing 44kg achieving £155. Messrs T F & G M Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm who sold a beautiful pen of 10 weighing 58kg to realising £183. Mule lambs topped at £176 weighing 59kg from Messrs W J Whitfield, Pennine View. All Mules were a joy to sell Messrs Lowis, Waterside sold 20 weighing 56kg to £172. Messrs R & J M Ridley, Cheviot Mules sold 23 weighing 52kg realising £167 a head. Cheviot lambs sold to 352ppk for a pen of 20 weighing 33kg achieving £116 from J Weir, High Lodore. The same home sold 13 Herdwicks weighing 38kg selling for £127.
