On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its Annual Michaelmas Prize Show & Sale of 646 Store Cattle & Feeding Bulls, kindly sponsored by PFK Rural and Newcastle Building Society. A sharp rise in the finished cattle trade led to much stronger demand across the board. A busy ringside of buyers ensured that all classes attracted eager bidding. An outstanding dairy-bred Angus heifer from J Wilson & Son, Southfield, topped the day’s trading at £2,635. The same home once again sold an excellent consignment of Montbéliard bullocks, topping at £2,415 for a pen of five. Messrs Brass, Low Row, topped the bullock trade at £2,575 with a British Blue. Messrs Shields, Prospect House, followed closely at £2,565 with a Limousin-cross bullock. Angus cattle are once again in huge demand and can be sold with ease, with Messrs Brass, Low Row, selling a pen of three at £2,465. All classes of well-fleshed, dairy-bred heifers showed a significant rise on the fortnight, with British Blue heifers regularly realising more than £2,100. Two from J Wilson & Son, Southfield, topped at £2,435. The annual consignment from the Bindloss family at Shap Abbey again attracted considerable interest. Their run of 38 16-month-old Limousin-cross bullocks averaged £2,292.76. More cattle will be needed for our next sale. If you have stock to sell, please get in touch. It later realised £2,480 and was purchased by Mr R Dickinson, High Knipe. Reserve Champion honours also went to Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey for their second-prize Limousin bullock, which sold for £2,475 to the judge. On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its fortnightly sale of 74 cast cows. A good entry forward in the cast ring met a full attendance of buyers, helping trade improve by 10–15ppk on the week. Messrs Strong, Well House, topped the sale at 369.5ppk with an OTM Limousin × British Blue weighing 621kg and realising £2,294.60, purchased by Mr D Barker. The consignment averaged £2,107.14 per head and 358ppk. OTM Holstein heifers from Mr W Schug, Bongate Moor, sold to a top of 327.5ppk and £2,056.70, purchased by Mr L Fell, with several others exceeding 300ppk. Cows straight from the parlour topped at £2,039.70 for Messrs A & W Johnston, Whitefold, with a nine-year-old Holstein weighing 780kg and selling at 261.5ppk. Mr A Laidlow, Dufton Wood, sold two Angus and Hereford cows weighing 1,031kg to average £2,581.73 per head. The consignment topped at £2,622.69 for a six-year-old Angus purchased by Jewitt Meat Company. A smaller entry of 701 store lambs was forward today; however, there was no let-up in trade, with all classes selling dearer on the week. A strong wholesale average of £114 per head was achieved. Topping the day's sale at £149 were two Texel × Mule lambs from L J Cowper, Newbridge. Suffolk lambs peaked at £135 for DW & TA Bell, High Dyke. Mule lambs sold particularly well, with M/s Marrs, Manor Farm, selling a pen of 45 lambs to £114 per head. Herdwick X lambs also met keen demand, selling to £114 for M/s Powell, Brimmer Head, while pure Herdwicks topped at £87 for a pen of 36 from C Spencer & A Langcake.
