Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 1,858 prime lambs, 109 prime hoggs and 399 lightweight hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 2,366 head. A bigger entry of spring lambs was seen locally this season, with numbers here in Penrith up by 600 on last year. Fed sheep and lambs, particularly those weighing 45kg and over, proved exceptionally good to sell. An overall average of 407ppk was achieved, or £183.18 per head. Topping today’s sale at 500ppk was a 44kg Beltex from E S & D Noble, Mill Farm, achieving £220. The sale topped at £268 per head on two occasions, firstly for a 66kg Suffolk lamb from Messrs Graves, Hesket House, achieving 406ppk and secondly for a 68kg Suffolk from Parkside Livestock, Aberdeen. Messrs Graves, Hesket House, sold their run of 46 excellently well-fed lambs to average 51.96kg, 434.85ppk, or £225.93 per head. Other top consignments: Parkside Livestock: 10 at 54kg, realising £224. J D Johnston, Castle Bank: 9 at 52kg, realising £221.56. T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke: 7 at 51kg, realising £221.29. D W Cannon, Low Abbey, sold Suffolks to 460ppk for a pen of seven weighing 48kg, or £221. This home’s run of 39 Suffolk Mule lambs averaged 49kg, 428ppk, or £211 per head. Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 2,762 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday. Numbers were strong, although still well short of buyers’ requirements. Vendors took full advantage of 13 active buyers today, ensuring all customers achieved a premium over other centres. Topping the sale at £350 was Mr K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields, with a superb pure-bred Texel selling to Mr James Linsley. A pair followed very closely at £340 from Mr P Qua, Northern Ireland, selling to weekly customers A J Meats, Birmingham. Plenty of customers averaged over £200, with the whole sale averaging £171.38. All 506 Suffolks sold to average £188, topping at £280 from Parkside Livestock, Aberdeen. Larger pens sold to £220 x 13, £212 x 11, £212 x 16, £206 x 11 and £200 x 15. Heavy fat ewes sold very well, unlike reports from other markets. Bluefaced Leicester ewes from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, achieved £230 ahead. Plenty of Mules £190 ahead, topping at £206 from Mr A G Teasdale, Colstons. Horned ewes continued to achieve strong returns, with Mr M McNally, Northern Ireland, selling 25 Scotch Blackfaces to £155. There were some marvellous returns among the small ewes, with first-time vendors travelling from Cwmbran, South Wales, Mr S Wadley sold a ring full of Welsh Mountains to £106, and Mr T J Noble, Mellgates, sold pure Shetlands to £88 a head. Cast rams fell short of requirements, with plenty more easily sold. Texels topped at £260 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck.
