Penrith & District Farmers Mart LLP held its opening sale of 600 store lambs on Monday. It was a fantastic opening sale, with no shortage of buyers ringside to purchase stock. Many buyers reported that sheep were £5–£10 dearer than at the previous week’s sales. The day’s trade topped at £138 for an outstanding pen of 18 Texel-cross lambs from J T Little, Ennerdale. Suffolk lambs reached £135 for a pen of four from Mr M R W Bell, Chesterwood. A small selection of Mules sold to £102 for a pen of 15, while a further pen of 35 from the same holding realised £98. Numerous other pens sold to £100. On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 126 store cattle. A superb show of quality stock met an exceptionally strong trade, with demand evident across all classes and prices continuing to rise. Leading the day’s trade at £2,515 was an outstanding 24-month-old Limousin-cross bullock from regular supporters Messrs M Ridsdale & Son, Yew Tree Farm. The same home also topped the heifer section, selling a Limousin-cross heifer for £2,365. Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House, sold a tremendous run of 24-month-old Aberdeen Angus bullocks, topping at £2,435 for a pair. Their impressive consignment of 11 bullocks averaged £2,302. Messrs J C Thwaites & Co, Thorneycroft, sold dairy-bred British Blue bullocks to £2,305. Messrs M A Crocker, Town End, sold 14-month-old Limousin heifers to £1,925 for a pen of three. On Monday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its fortnightly sale of 54 cast cows. While cattle prices have fallen across the country, with deadweight firms in particular making significant reductions, the live ring continues to demonstrate its value. All classes met a trade mirroring our previous sale, with not one cow selling for a penny less—once again proving that competition is key to successful sales and marketing. Messrs H W & J Birbeck, Castle Hill, sold three perfectly fed cows to average £2,368.47, or 321p/kg. The consignment peaked at £2,754.32 for a seven-year-old Limousin-cross Blue cow weighing 873kg, purchased by Mr D Barker. Cast bulls followed closely, peaking at £2,727.91 for a seven-year-old Holstein stock bull from Messrs H & EM Hunter & Son, Berrier, weighing 1,139kg, it sold for 239.5p/kg. Black and White cows reached an impressive £2,276.26 for a ten-year-old British Friesian from Messrs R Forrest & Son, Low Rutter. Weighing 916kg, it sold to Mr G Chapman. The same home sold lighter-weight cows to 250.5p/kg, while Messrs E & AE Harrison, Woodhouse, also achieved 250.5p/kg with a Holstein Friesian sold straight from the parlour. Feeding cows sold exceptionally well, with Mr P Wilson, The Wath, selling a first-cross British Blue cow weighing 689kg for £1,911.98, or 277.5p/kg.
