On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,088 prime sheep, comprising of 2,747 prime lambs & 2,341 cast ewes & rams.
A better offering of prime sheep was forward on the week with an SSQ average of 200p/kg being achieved. Topping at 256pph went to M/S MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park with 39kg Beltex Lambs selling to West Scottish Lamb.
M/S AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall sold a run of 45 Texel X Beltex Lambs 42kgs to average £97.93/229pph.
Heavy lambs sold exceptionally well topping at £116 achieved for Texel Lambs from M/S Graham, Hallrigg selling to Mr Ditta.
A run full of Texel X Mules from M/S JJ Henderson & Son, Park House weighing 64kgs to £108 sold to West Scottish Lamb. This run of 94 averaged £100.45/169pph.
M/S S Allan & Sons, Greenhow sold 54kg Mules to £97 selling to Farmers Fresh Wales Ltd, whose run of heavy Mules averaged £93.77/180pph (52kg).
M/S JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm sold a run of 61kg Beltex X lambs to average £105.21 and sold for £113 for 7 63kgs to West Scottish Lamb.
Another massive show of Ewes was forward on the week with a total of 329 selling in-excess of £100, topping at £180 achieved from Holme House selling to Pak Mecca Meats. M/S Graham, Hallrigg sold Texels to £166 and averaged £134.
Horned Ewes and Mule Ewes took the biggest lift with M/s RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe selling to a high of £91 and a pen of 30 from Backmuir Livestock achieving £89 a head. Scotch Blackface sold to £78 ahead and a pen of 12 Swaledales Ewes sold to £65 a head from M/S JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat selling to Mr J Tucker.
One of the dearest trades was seen for a long time selling to a large ringside of competitive buyers. More ewes are required on a weekly basis.
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 300 Store Lambs.
Numbers were in short supply once again, with plenty of customers around the ring side, this ensured all classes were a fast trade, and numbers were short of buyers’ requirements.
Topping the sale at £87 was a pen of Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sawrey-Cookson Partners, Newbiggin Hall Farm, purchased by Mr M Gillett.
The whole sale averaged £63.22.

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Christmas show & sale of 67 Rearing Calves.
Judging was in the capable hands of Mr B Brass, Low Row, who awarded the champion honours to a four-week-old British Blue bull calf from Mrs S Armstrong & Sons, Moorriggs, this calf later sold for £375 to Mr D Poskitt, Doncaster.
British Blue bull stirks sold to a top of £415 from Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm, selling to Messrs Atkinson, Plumpton.
Young calves sold exceptionally well, with British Blue bulls achieving £395 a head from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, purchased by Mr P Iveson, Orton.
A much larger ringside of prospective buyers was forward, giving the whole sale a good lift across the sale.

A majority show of parlour cows was forward with them selling to a much sharper trade. Topping the sale at 126.5ppk came from Mr W H Brass, Low Row with a Fresian cow weighing 842kgs, totalling £1065.13 selling to Dovecote Park. This run of 5 cows out the parlour averaged £888.01/118ppk.
Plain Holstein cows sold exceptionally well once again, 80ppk and British Blue cows topped at £1022.39 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ransbeck, weighing 749kgs selling to Mr D Barker.
A full ringside of buyers were forward once again and many more could have been easily sold.

A small show of Prime was forward on the fortnight. Topping at £1184.23/167.5ppk came from Messrs J E Bellas & Son, Croft Ends with a Beef Shorthorn, 20 months old, none farm assured selling to Mr B Howard.
