On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,861 Prime Hoggs. Another excellent day’s trading was seen here in Penrith, with 80 hogg vendors forward and a total of 2,861 prime sheep sold through the ring, alongside 460 light lambs weighed and marketed. Trade across the board was firmer on the week, with all customers keen for stock. This resulted in an overall average of 393ppk or 416 SQQ, equating to £186.56. Quality and meat were in notably short supply, making well-finished types exceptionally good to sell. Topping the day at 537ppk was a pen of seven outstanding hoggs from the Hall Family, Inglewood Edge. Weighing 46kg, they realised £247 per head, the day’s top price. Messrs M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park, returned for the first time with Beltex hoggs, selling to 536ppk for a pen of four weighing 44kg, totalling £236 per head. Large numbers exceeded 500ppk, with several standout consignment averages: • Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge sold 24 to average £230.27 or 514ppk. • Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm sold 30 to average £222.27. • R J & A Y Armstrong, Terrace Farm broke the £220 barrier with 6 averaging £222. Suffolk hoggs topped at £225 for five at 61kg from W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot. Suffolks also sold to 413ppk for 45kg hoggs, realising £186 from Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey. Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke, sold a strong run of 13 Suffolk Hoggs, weighing 49kg to £194 or 399ppk. Mule hoggs reached a top of £208 for a pen of 20 weighing 61kg from M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park. Hill-bred hoggs also eased over 400ppk.
