On Wednesday 20th May, PDFM had a bumper day, with well over 9,000 sheep through the gates. Comprising of 297 spring lambs, 4,175 prime hoggs, 904 lightweight lambs and 4,096 cast ewes, the sale equated to 9,472 head.
A lovely show of spring lambs sold to average £208 per head or 472 sqq or 452 overall.
Topping the sale at 550ppk for a Beltex weighing 40kg achieving £220 from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm with homes run of 10 weighing 41kg averaged 520ppk or 414.60ppk. Top price per head of £240 came for a pair of cracking Texel lambs from Mr R A Crichton, Rottington Hall this homes run of 40 sold to average 46kg or £218.75.
Suffolk lambs sold to 517ppk for 41kg achieving £212 from Messrs T F & G L Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm.
A huge entry of hoggs for the time of year with well fed sheep continuing to fly. All classes of sheep under 50kg would be dearer on the week with heavy hoggs very similar. More handier weighted hoggs on offer today.
A sale average of 410ppk was achieved an sqq of 424ppk or £194 per head, topping the days sale of 488ppk for a pair of Beltex’s weighing 43kg achieving £210 per head from Mr G Cartmel, Hollands.
Top price per head of £256 came for a pen of 21 Texel’s weighing 66kg from Messrs G & R Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York. This homes run of 349 sold to average £230.24. Mules from this home sold to £232 for a pen of 16 weighing 59kg.
Scotch Blackface sold to 444ppk for a pen of 22 weighing 45kg achieving £200. Cheviots sold a pen of 20 at 458ppk weighing 49kg at £209. Numbers are set to tighten and more are needed in the coming weeks.
