On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,102 prime sheep, comprising of 605 prime hoggs, 437 spring lambs & 2,060 cast ewes & rams.
A total of 473 lambs were forward with another flying trade, carrying on from last week, with many more required to fulfil our growing ringside of buyers.
The sale topped at 429ppk for an outstanding Beltex X lamb, weighing 42kg from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, realising £180. A top price per head of £190 was achieved for a 46kg Texel lamb from Messrs J Stalker, Ratten Castle. Numerous pens of lambs eased over 400ppk/£180 per head, with this resulting in a pounds-per-head average of £160.
Messrs J Stalker, also sold Suffolk lambs to £188 for 49kg, with another pair at 43kg achieving 395ppk/£170. Messrs R Hall, Inglewood Edge, sold a brilliant run of 27 mainly Suffolk X lambs to average £174.26.
A total of 605 hoggs were forward with all buyers keen to purchase. Heavy hoggs throughout the sale regularly achieved £180 plus, the dearest trade in six months, topping at 348ppk for a pair of Texel X hoggs, weighing 50kg, achieving £174 from Messrs EA & N Thompson & Son, Bromley Green. A top price per head of £194 was realised for a pen of 4 Texel X hoggs, weighing 79kg from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House. Mule hoggs sold to £157 for a pen weighing 54kg from Messrs T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke. Numbers look set to tighten and sheep can be sold to vendors’ advantage.
Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, sold a pen of 5 pure Herdwicks, weighing 43kg, to £139 (323ppk).
In the cast ewe section a week after the Qurbani Festival and demand holds very strong with a whole sale average of £161.21 being achieved. Topping at £312 went to Mr J Adams, Banchory, Aberdeenshire with a superb pure Texel ewe purchased by Mr A Dawson. Plenty of well bred ewes £250 plus with Mr G Bell, Haas Side Farm selling Texels to £280 to A J Meats, Birmingham.
Weight still being good to sell with the best Suffolks to £248 for 10 Suffolk x Texels and plenty of offers £200 plus. The best English Mules to £196 from Messrs D G & L M Strong, Sleagill House and a ringfull of 20 Scotch Mules to £192 from New House Farm, the same home also selling Cheviot Mules to £202.
Horned ewes were marginally dearer on the week with plenty £120 – £128 and well short of buyers requirements. The best Swales to £134 from Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke and a pen of 25 Scotch Blackface to £128 purchased by Mr M Bowe.
Rams regularly achieving £200 plus topping at £245 from Mr G Robinson, Widewath with Suffolks but plenty of Strength £220 - £230.
