On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,381 Prime Hoggs. A total of 2,381 prime hoggs were forward, along with another substantial entry of heavy hoggs. Handy weighted sheep proved by far the easiest to sell, with only 500 head in the SQQ bracket, resulting in an impressive overall average of 416ppk. The overall sale averaged £195.34 per head. The day’s top price of 526ppk came for 38kg hoggs, realising £200 from Messrs W. R. & F. D. Siddle, Honeypot. Two other vendors sold Beltex hoggs to 520ppk: • 45kg at £234 from Messrs J. Carrick, Ireshope Plains •40kg at £208 from A. & A. Little, Hollands The top price per head was £238 for a pen of five superb 48kg hoggs (496ppk) from Messrs F. Savage & Sons, Petteril Green. Their run of 38 hoggs averaged £217.82. Suffolk hoggs sold to 430ppk, with a 46kg hogg at £198 from Mr J. Bowling & Son, York. A pen of five 60kg hoggs reached £217, again from W. R. & F. D. Siddle, Honeypot. Messrs Gillispie, Quarry Gill sold a pen of 18 Cheviots at 55kg, achieving £212. Cheviot hoggs also sold to 410ppk, with a pen of 24 at 48kg realising £197 from Messrs R. & J. M. Ridley, Ranbeck. Herdwick hoggs reached 419ppk for a pen of 26 at 42kg from Auchengray Farm. W. & S. E. Dickinson, Kirkbarrow sold 42 Scotch Blackfaced hoggs at 41kg, achieving 415ppk. On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,238 Cast Ewes & Rams. A much larger entry forward this week, with all buyers present, ensured a blistering average of £187.69. Trade topped twice at £385 for Texel ewes from Ballymaderphy Road and Ballymena Road, both selling to our weekly supporters A J Meats, Birmingham, and Yorkshire Halal. A grand total of 1,088 sheep sold at over £200, with all 586 Suffolks averaging £209.18 and topping at £275 for superbly bred Suffolks purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Larger pens achieved strong returns including £246×16, £226×10, £225×20, £221×24, £221×21, £219×20, and £219×15. There was exceptional demand for Mules, with trade remaining very buoyant. Top price was £212 for a pen of Scotch-bred ewes from Mr W. Morison, South Bogbain. Another pen from Greystone House seen 14 sell to £217, while the best English Mules reached £210 from Mr M. Allan, Knock Hall. Horned ewes reached new levels, proving extremely easy to sell and still falling well short of buyer requirements. Top price was £170 for Scotch Blackface and Mr W. Morison, South Bogbain, selling 12 to £164 and a ring-full of 37 to £160. Large pens also sold strongly at £163×10, £154×20, £151×10, £150×24, £149×10, £148×39, £148×18, £146×12, £145×24, and £143×36. The very best Swaledale ewes reached £168 from first-time customers M. A. Bainbridge, Ettersgill, with all Swaledales averaging £122.22. A new record was set for Herdwick ewes, with Mr R. J. Powell, Brimmer Head, achieving an impressive £146, closely followed by £142. Cast rams averaged over £200, topping at £320 for an outstanding Charollais ram and a pair of heavy Texels from Mr J. On Friday, we held our fortnightly sale of 242 calves and stirks. Another excellent day was enjoyed at Penrith, with a strong entry and a blistering trade throughout. Top price of the day was £1700 for a 14‑month‑old Limousin bull from Messrs T. J. & J. M. Powley, Blands Farm. Two 7‑month‑old Limousin bullocks from Messrs J. D. & F. Wharton, Town Head Farm sold impressively at £1510, while Limousin heifers peaked at £1470 for an 8‑month‑old from Messrs F. R. Crew, The Gall. Holstein bulls from J. M. & R. M. Haston, Dearham Hall reached £840 for 6 months old. Ayrshire bullocks sold to £860 from Messrs Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm. Calves were in exceptional demand, topping at £1040 for 14‑week‑old British Blue bull from Donaldson Dairies, whose run of 12 averaged £863. Messrs P. H. Thompson & Partners sold eight quality 13‑week‑old Angus bulls, topping at £945 and averaging £856.88. Heifers also met a strong trade, with a standout 12‑week‑old British Blue heifer from Messrs H. & E. M. Hunter & Son, Cape Farm, selling to £850. Angus heifers sold to £700 for an 8‑week‑old from Brackenburgh Farm Ltd. More numbers are needed to fulfil demand here in Penrith, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
