On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their monthly sale of 93 Dairy Cattle.
The morning of the sale, a busy entry into the show ring with some outstanding animals forward, a real credit to all vendors. The quality at each sale plus the genuine consistency of honest sound cattle keeps ensuring a packed ringside of buyers.
Topping the sale at £3900 went to a superb Holstein Friesian Heifer calved 1 month, giving 36 litres from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House with the proceeds of this sale going to MND Association with further donations being made since giving a grand total of £5000 overall.
Champion honours went to first time vendors, Skirwith Hall Farms with a very classy strong Black Heifer, 32 days calved and giving 32 litres selling to the judge, Messrs T & M D Beaty, Langhorn Farm, Egremont.
The Reserve Championship was awarded to a beautiful well-presented Dairy Shorthorn Heifer, sweet and correct in the udder giving 36 litres and calved 4 weeks from again first-time customer Messrs P & C A Harrison, Breckney Hill, Northumberland selling to local stockmen Messrs H & E M Hunter & Son, Berrier.
Once again British Friesian cattle attracted customers from all over the country, with Penrith and surrounding areas being noted for producing the very best. Topping the section went to RW & J Bell, Nerewater Farm, Wigton with a second calved cow giving 34 litres and calved four weeks. This animal also received 1st prize in this section, a long wearing cow correct in every way, selling to Mr W H Brass, Low Row for £3,300.
Leading in the averages went to M/s W Williamson, Barrow Moor Farm, Appleby with a run of second calved British Friesian cows, giving 35L only 2 weeks calved achieving £2950, topping at £3000.
In calf Heifers and dry cows comfortably £1800-£2000 but looking the best value on the day topping at £2050 went to M/s DW Cannon & Son, Low Abbey with Holstiens Friesian’s due January to the Limousin.

On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 222 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A brilliant entry of 237 Calves and Stirks were forward for our Christmas Show and Sale, kindly judged by Mr Mark Burton from Boldron. It was the largest ringside of buyers ever seen here in Penrith with an exceptional trade.
Calves sold over £1,000 per head on 3 occasions. Topping the Calves today came for the first prize Blue Heifer from M/s J H & J E Taylor, The Harras, this eight-week-old calf sold for £1,110 purchased by Mr D Holgate, Wakefield.
Championship honours were awarded to M/s Mallinson, Hallfield for their 1st prize British Blue Bull at 10 weeks of age, selling for £1040 again purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Reserve Championship rosette went to a beautiful Charollais heifer from JM & J Fisher & Daughters, Holmewrangle, this 7-week-old calf later sold for £1,060.
60 Heifer Calves sold to average £549 per head.
106 Bull Calves sold to average £500.81 per head.
