On Friday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its Late Summer Show and Sale of 83 Dairy Cattle.
Another successful day in the dairy ring, even with timings running slightly behind due to a record entry of 444 calves and stirks. Trade for dairy was very strong, with buyers travelling the extra mile for genuine local stock.
Topping the sale at £3,800 were dispersing customers M/s RW & J Bell, Nerewater, Wigton, with a perfectly presented heifer, correct in every way, selling to M/s W. H. Brass, Low Row.
Closely following at £3,500 was M/s J & A. G. Nicholson, Causeway Foot, with a genuinely correct British Friesian heifer giving 28 litres, again selling to M/s W. H. Brass, Low Row.
In the Holstein section, M/s Fisher, Mossthorn sold two excellent heifers giving 30 litres to average £3,025, topping at £3,250, selling to M/s R. G. & W. Whitfield, Balladoyle, Silloth.
A run of three second‑calving cows from Mr D. Graham, Melfell View averaged £2,900, topping at £3,000 for a 40‑litre cow calved two weeks ago.
M/s G & E. A. Harrison turned out three natural, genuine heifers to average £3,000, topping at £3,400 with an Ayrshire‑cross Holstein.
M/s B. R. & H. M. Horsley, Woodhouse sold two pure Jerseys to average £2,075, including a third‑calved cow and a heifer which sold to £2,150, purchased by M/s James, Mid Todhills.
M/s A. & G. Innes, Meikle Urchany, Aberdeenshire made the long trip once again, selling a run of dry cows to average £2,100, topping at £2,400 twice, with the same home also selling a heifer to £2,500.
Overall, the trade reflected a welcome priced rise in milk and a little more confidence in the sector, resulting in stronger returns throughout.

Today we held our fortnightly sale of 450 calves and stirks.
A day to remember here in Penrith with a record number of 450 calves and stirks of all classes on offer. A huge thank you to customers, old and new, for coming to support our sale.
The sale topped at £1,940 for a fantastic 13-month-old Limousin bullock from Mr AP Mason, Looking Flatt. Messrs RG & TB Wilson, Scales Farm, sold a tremendous run of 7 Limousin X sucklers, 7-8-month-old, to average £1,612, topping at £1,770 for a bullock and topping the heifer section at £1,700.
A great show of bull stirks was on offer, with first-time vendors Messrs Coulthard, Chalkside, selling a lovely pen of 6 British Blues, 10-months-old to £1,410.
A terrific show of stirks which were extremely well-bid for throughout the sale.
A huge entry of calves were forward, with trade exceptional throughout, this section topped at £1,260 for a fabulous British Blue bull from Messrs Forrester, Down-by-Rigg, another first-time consignor here in Penrith, others from this home realised £1,040, purchased by Mr A Kelcher, Alnwick. Heifer calves topped at £960 for a British Blue from Messrs TT & JE Mason, Bank Farm. A huge amount of Black & Whites calves were on offer, selling to £650 from Messrs M & B Alderson, Stepends.
Young calves continue to storm with 2-week-old animals regularly achieving £500-£600.
