On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,754 Cast Ewes & Rams.
One of the best shows of ewes seen in a long time with a total sale average of £169.80 being achieved. Topping at £345 from Mr G Bell, Hass Side and Mr H Mcrae, Shethin Farm, Aberdeenshire selling Pure Texels as well to £330 purchased by A J Meats, Birmingham.
All Suffolks sold averaged a staggering £195.25 topping at £300 for a Suffolk x Texel from Mr M McNally, Northern Ireland with larger pens to £258 x10, £248 x10, £218 x11, £218 x23, £204 x14, £199 x28, £198 x18.
A grand total of 597 sold in excess of £200 with some greater pens of Continental ewes achieving £288 x14, £275 x21, £244 x18, £242 x19, £229 x18, £229 x14, £228 x12, £224 x13, £221 x12.
The best English Mules to £186 from Mr P Baker, Lincolnshire with a pen of 17, followed with a pen of 33 achieving £181 with other larger pens to £181 x14, £181 x14, £170 x28, £170 x12, £169 x15.
Horned ewes were completely mad with numbers a million-mile short of requirements. The best Scotch Blackface to £150 from Mr B Duffton, with a pen of 14 and pen of 13 closely followed at £140. Swaledales topped at £117 from Messrs T L Thompson & Sons, Askham Gate with 13 and Messrs E & S M Taylforth, Yew Tree Lodge achieving an average of £107.62 for 74. Herdwick ewes sold topped at £110 for a pen of 38 and 25 from the same home.
Again, more numbers are required to fulfil the demand more on a weekly basis not just a one-week wonder! Take advantage of the ringside of 10 – 12 weekly buyers. Ensuring a very competitive and an honest trade for all.

Today we held our weekly sale of 2,041 Prime Hoggs.
Following on from our Sunday sale we had another entry of 2,041 hoggs sold, equating to 4,580 sold within the week. A wonderful way to start 2026.
All classes sold to dearer rates, this resulting in an average of 338p/kg overall, 355p/kg SQQ, for a more weathered show of lambs.
Topping today’s sale at 436p/kg (£170) was a pen of four Beltex hoggs, weighing 39kg, from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm. This homes run of thirty-two sold to average 403.8p/kg.
A top price per head of £196 was achieved for a single Texel 62kg hogg from Messrs JH & MJ Jefferson, High Pow Farm. Suffolks sold to a top of £194 for 64kg lambs from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House. Suffolks realised a top of 370p/kg (£122) for a clipped hogg weighing 33kg from Mr LW Taylor, Hill Top.
Mules sold to £174 for a pen of seventeen weighing 57kg from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House. RM & A Hall, Sunny Bank, sold 44kg Mules to £148 (344p/kg).

Today we held our opening 2026 sale of 143 Store Cattle and Feeding Bulls of all classes.
The new year opened on a high with Mr D Smith, Far Close, Dufton, topping the sale at £2575 for a nineteen-month-old Limousin cross British Blue bullock, selling to Mr D Barker. This run averaged £2442.50.
Heifers topped at £2295 for a dairy-bred British Blue from Messrs E Hird, Park Head, and closely followed at £2155 for a dairy-bred Aberdeen Angus heifer from the same home.
Our next sale is the Bonanza prize show & sale and will be held on Monday 19th January, entries are required for this sale where a full accompaniment of buyers is expected, please don’t hesitate to enter, entries for this sale close Noon Monday 12th January.
